Dune 3: Jason Momoa Drops Major Hint About Duncan Idaho’s Return

Summary

  • Duncan Idaho will return in Dune: Messiah
  • Potential return hints at different portrayal
  • Director Villeneuve key to Dune’s success

Jason Momoa subtly hinted at the current state of his Dune character, Duncan Idaho, but this suggestion won’t or shouldn’t surprise long-time readers of Frank Herbert’s original works.

In the 2021 film adaptation of Frank Herbert’s novel “Dune,” directed by Denis Villeneuve, Jason Momoa portrayed Duncan Idaho. Duncan Idaho is a steadfast swordmaster and mentor to Paul Atreides, heir of House Atreides, played by Timothée Chalamet. In the movie, Duncan Idaho manages to survive the initial attack on House Atreides’ stronghold on Arrakis, but ultimately sacrifices himself in a valiant stand against several laser-armed Sardaukar soldiers, allowing Paul and his mother, Lady Jessica Atreides, to flee to a hidden Fremen outpost. The third installment of the trilogy, titled “Dune: Messiah,” continues the story with Paul now as Emperor, struggling with the widespread impact of the religious conflict ignited in his name across the universe.

It’s Not Over For Duncan Idaho

He’ll Be Returning in Dune: Messiah

People who watched the first Dune movie and are new to the universe might have thought that Idaho’s brave character was killed off, since he doesn’t appear in Dune: Part Two. However, Jason Momoa has given us reason to hope. In an interview on the TODAY show, when asked if he received a call from the makers of Dune: Legacy, Momoa gave a hint and added a disclaimer.

I’m unsure if I might face consequences or not, but it’s quite similar to the intrigue in ‘Game of Thrones,’ if you catch my drift?… Just because we haven’t read the same books doesn’t make me responsible for your lack of knowledge.

He then hit the hammer on the head with the affirmative words:

“Yeah, there’s going to be … I’m going to be coming back.”

The following paragraphs contain spoilers for Dune: Messiah

In the original text, Momoa didn’t disclose the specifics of how Duncan would reappear, but fans of Frank Herbert’s Dune series have a strong inkling. In the second novel, Dune: Messiah, Duncan returns as Hayt, a ghola clone created by Bene Tleilax gene scientists and given to Emperor Paul (Atreides) Muad’Dib. The emotional impact of Duncan’s return in the primarily political and religious context of Dune: Messiah cannot be underestimated. If the films stick closely to the books, Hayt will retain Duncan’s sword skills and appearance but lack his memories, which encompass a significant friendship with Paul and a more tranquil relationship with the Fremen. However, Villeneuve has demonstrated a propensity for altering source material in his adaptations, hinting that Duncan may return in a different fashion and scope — possibly through flashbacks or visions.

According to the reports, it appears that the production of Dune: Messiah is set to commence this summer. If accurate, fans eagerly anticipate Villeneuve to achieve a cinematic hat-trick with this project. Previously, Dune was considered one of the most challenging novels to adapt in live-action; however, the filmmaker successfully adapted it not once, but twice. Assuming there are no significant changes, the third movie in the trilogy might be Villeneuve’s final contribution to the series, but Warner Bros.’ intention to expand the Dune franchise is evident. The loss of a talented director like Villeneuve would undoubtedly be felt by any franchise; however, his departure could leave behind an enduring legacy if it coincides with his long-awaited Academy Award for Best Director.
