Dune 3 Release Date Announced — Everything We Know So Far

The new movie, officially titled Dune: Part Three, continues the Dune saga after Dune: Part One and Dune: Part Two. Director and co-writer Denis Villeneuve has hinted that this installment will be different in tone and speed, and will be even more epic in scope than the previous films.

Dune: Part Three will be the last movie in Denis Villeneuve’s Dune series, based on the second book in Frank Herbert’s original trilogy, Dune Messiah. Expected to be released during the holidays, the film aims to provide a satisfying end to the story, particularly focusing on the central love story between Paul and Chani.

When Does Dune 3 Come Out?

The final installment of Denis Villeneuve’s Dune trilogy, Dune: Part Three, is scheduled to be released on December 18, 2026. The film picks up 17 years after the events of Part Two, a significant time jump compared to the 12-year gap in the original novels. Villeneuve collaborated with Heike Merker to carefully portray the effects of this time passage on the characters. Hans Zimmer is composing the score. According to Deadline, Villeneuve described the film as having a distinctly different feel, with a unique tone, rhythm, and pacing, compared to the previous installments. He co-wrote the screenplay with Brian K. Vaughan.

Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Florence Pugh, Charlotte Rampling, Javier Bardem, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Josh Brolin will all reprise their roles in Dune: Part Three. Joining them are new cast members Robert Pattinson, Isaach De Bankolé, Nakoa-Wolf Momoa, and Ida Brooke. Jason Momoa also returns, but as a different character – a resurrected version named Hayt – after appearing in the first Dune film.

Dune: Part Three Teases Massive Action For The Franchise’s Final Film

After a painful separation caused by Paul’s decision to marry Princess Irulan and ignite a massive war, Chani and Paul have reconciled. In a tender moment, Chani asks Paul what name they would give a daughter, and he responds with “Ghanima,” explaining she’d need to be as strong as her mother. When Paul wonders about a son, Chani says she would name him after Paul’s father, Leto Atreides, hoping he’d inherit his grandfather’s wisdom.

It’s important to remember that Paul’s father, Duke Leto Atreides, was killed on the planet Arrakis as part of a plot by the former Emperor Shaddam and the Harkonnens. At the end of Dune Messiah, Chani gives birth to twins named Leto and Ghanima. Nakoa-Wolf Momoa and Ida Brooke will play these children in Dune: Part Three, meaning they’ll be important to the story.

The film cuts between beautiful views of space and scenes of widespread devastation, showing the grim aftermath of the war Paul and his forces fought on a distant planet. Paul reveals to his mother that the conflict has become self-sustaining, endlessly fueling itself. He quietly tells Lady Jessica,

The more I fight… the more enemies fight back.

Notably, Paul is wearing a uniform from Caladan, the planet featured in Dune: Part One, indicating the scene takes place on House Atreides’ home world. He’s seeking advice from his mother about the war he’s fought, wondering how his father managed it all. Lady Jessica points out that Leto never initiated a war. It’s clear Paul has changed from his father, a man of principle, due to the treachery he’s experienced and, crucially, because he’s overwhelmed by his own power.

The story takes place during a widespread war, with Paul and his forces fighting battles on different planets. The atmosphere is filled with the sounds of war – drums and chanting – and within this turmoil, Irulan seems to be plotting something. We also see Anya-Taylor Joy as Alia Atreides and are introduced to Robert Pattinson’s character, Scytale. Scytale, a technologically enhanced human dressed in white, has a threatening presence and clearly intends to cause harm to Paul.

The trailer includes a powerful image of Taylor-Joy in a white dress, standing on what appears to be Alia’s temple, with Fremen people gathered below. We also see Javier Bardem as Stilgar, a devoted follower of the prophecy and a strong supporter of Paul, fighting in the holy war. Other scenes depict Paul and Alia sharing a moment of connection amongst the Fremen, and Scytale, equipped with a stillsuit, moving through their ranks.

Okay, I’m so hyped for this next Dune movie! Jason Momoa is back, but it’s a twist – he’s not Duncan Idaho this time, but a sort of resurrected clone called Hayt, given to Paul by this creepy guy Scytale. They even showed a fight scene where Hayt actually blocked Paul’s attack, which was awesome! We got a glimpse of Paul looking all powerful, surveying his huge empire on Arrakis. But the trailer ended with Chani, looking fierce with her crysknife, ready for battle as everything starts to go crazy around her. It cut right there, leaving me wanting more!
