As a seasoned gamer who’s seen more cinematic universes than I can count on my fingers, I must say, the news about Dune doesn’t exactly fill me with joy. It’s like hearing that your favorite MMORPG is going to have a new expansion pack, but the original developers are nowhere to be found.
I understand the allure of expanding a successful franchise, especially in today’s streaming era. But when it comes to Dune, I’m not sure if it’s Star Wars or just another attempt at cashing in on a popular IP. The first two films were masterpieces, and Denis Villeneuve, Timotheé Chalamet, Zendaya, and Florence Pugh brought the world of Dune to life in a way that was truly magical.
If Warner Bros. is planning a new show and a fourth movie without them, I’m afraid it might be like playing an expansion pack with all-new characters who just don’t feel right. It’s not that they can’t do the job, but they’re simply not Paul Atreides, Chani, or Lady Jessica.
I’ve seen a lot of franchises try to reboot or expand without the original creators and cast, and it rarely ends well. Maybe it’s like trying to play an MMORPG with all-new classes – sure, you can do it, but it’s just not the same as playing with the ones you know and love.
On a lighter note, I guess we’ll just have to wait and see if this new Dune expansion pack turns out to be a raider’s den or a hidden treasure trove. Until then, I’ll keep my fingers crossed and hope for the best. After all, who knows? Maybe this time they’ll get it right.
Would you still be interested in watching the movie “Dune” if it had an entirely new set of actors and a different director? That appears to be the current situation.
Several reliable outlets have shared whispers suggesting that Warner Bros. and Legendary may be looking to prolong the Dune saga past Denis Villeneuve’s planned trilogy. According to Jordan Ruimy, a source close to the Quebec filmmaker stated in the autumn that Villeneuve was somewhat displeased by these proposals to expand the franchise, whether he is involved or not.
Daniel Richtman’s report hints at a “new show and a fourth movie.”
Will Denis, Timotheé, Zendaya, And Others Return?
It’s highly unlikely that Denis would be available for another project soon. With “Cleopatra” in pre-production, an adaptation of “Rendezvous with Rama,” and a deal to dramatize the non-fiction book “Nuclear War: A Scenario,” Denis Villeneuve’s schedule is already packed. After finishing the story of Paul Atreides, it seems he has plenty more to keep him busy in Hollywood.
It’s likely that Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, and Florence Pugh will also experience similar situations, given their roles in Dune. One of the main factors drawing them to this project was the opportunity to collaborate with Denis. However, these three actors are rapidly rising talents who can choose from a variety of projects. Already, Zendaya and Florence Pugh are immersed in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Considering their commitments to another vast, perpetual universe appears somewhat unfeasible.
The upcoming book, titled “Children of Dune“, serves as the subsequent installment in the “Dune” series, following on from “Messiah“. Although I won’t reveal any spoilers, it is worth noting that some significant characters from the initial three films make crucial appearances in “Children of Dune“. Given this continuity and the nearly decade-long gap between novels, there might be some recasting involved.
Dune Seems To Be The Next Big Expanded Universe
Back in the ’90s, it was all about the blockbuster hits or flops for the studios. But as we entered the new millennium, things started to change. Instead of relying on one big movie, they began focusing on establishing tentpole franchises, like “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy and the “Harry Potter” series. Then, in the 2010s, it was a full-on competition for who could create the most extensive universe, and that’s where we’ve been ever since – chasing after these extended cinematic universes.
A significant aspect of the extended universe idea is streaming content. Studios aim to capitalize on a hit movie franchise by developing popular television series (or multiple) that attract new viewers to their service. Examples include The Penguin, Dune: Prophecy, and the upcoming Harry Potter remake from Warner Bros., as well as Amazon’s The Rings of Power, FX’s Fargo, and Disney’s Marvel and Star Wars shows.
The Dune series, brimming with legend and possibilities, could serve as Warner Bros.’ equivalent to Star Wars. However, their initial adaptation, titled Dune: Prophecy, has garnered a mix of opinions overall. Metacritic scores stand at 64 from critics (on the lower end of positive) and 5.4 from users (mid-tier). Despite this, the studio has decided to continue the story with a second season of Prophecy.
In worlds such as Dune and Star Wars, there are numerous tales waiting to be told. If a story fails to capture an audience, it’s simply a matter of moving onto the next one. This could explain Warner Bros.’ enthusiasm for the franchise.
