As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I can’t help but feel a sense of deja vu when it comes to the Xbox Series S’s struggles during game development. It seems like every other title these days has issues optimizing for this console, and it’s becoming a bit of a trend that’s not so appealing.
The title “Dune Awakening” has had fans eagerly waiting for quite some time now. It was initially unveiled during Gamescom 2022, and more recently, it was displayed at Gamescom 2024 with a gameplay trailer that sparked excitement among long-time followers of the series as well as newcomers.
Initially, the new video game is set to debut exclusively on PC in 2025. Later on, versions for PlayStation 5 and Xbox are planned. Lately, some details have emerged suggesting that Xbox enthusiasts might face challenges playing this highly anticipated game.
Recent findings suggest that creating the game for the less powerful Xbox Series S console has posed some challenges, resulting in a somewhat difficult development process.
According to Scott Junior, the chief product officer, it turned out to be difficult to optimize the game for the “Xbox Series S” while in the development process.
However, this isn’t something we haven’t seen before, as other titles like Baldur’s Gate 3, for instance, had an issue regarding the split-screen co-op.
Due to this, the release of the Series S and Series X versions of the game were postponed, with each console launching in different regions independently.
Regarding Dune Awakening, the creators remain optimistic about adapting the game for various high-performance systems. Speaking on the subject of hardware constraints for less powerful systems, Junior assured that:
It will still perform well on hardware that’s years and years old.
The Difficulty With Xbox Series S
The current circumstances lead us to doubt the legitimacy of the Xbox Series S. Originally marketed as an affordable alternative that offers comparable performance to the Series X, this console was intended to deliver nearly the same functionality as its more expensive counterpart, with the exception of playing games from physical discs.
As a gamer, I’ve encountered my fair share of disappointments when it comes to games not holding up over time. From the grandeur of Baldur’s Gate 3 to the anticipation surrounding Dune Awakening, and even Control, there have been numerous instances where developers struggle with hardware that simply can’t keep pace with its competitors. It’s a shame, really, as these games have so much potential, but they seem to be hampered by technical limitations.
Our biggest hope is that Xbox ultimately separates the two consoles, making it so that the Series X and S don’t always share game releases on the same day.
In this manner, individuals using more advanced hardware have the opportunity to experience a game prior to its optimization for less powerful systems.
However, now it falls upon the developers to skillfully maneuver through this peculiar console terrain, with the hope that they can maximize its potential for the benefit of their followers.
