As a long-time fan of the Dune saga, I must say that I am absolutely thrilled with the success and promise of “Dune: Prophecy.” With its captivating storyline, engaging characters, and the familiar yet fresh take on the universe, it has managed to keep me hooked from the very beginning. The show’s ability to delve deeper into the mysteries of the Bene Gesserit, while maintaining a loose interpretation of the source material, is nothing short of impressive.
Prophecy,” which directly ties into Denis Villeneuve’s Dune films, has been greenlit for a second season by HBO. This decision was made shortly before the first chapter of this prequel series is due to wrap up after five episodes.
In its first day, the debut episode of Dune: Prophecy garnered over two million viewers, and eventually attracted around 15 million viewers, which was three million less than the initial audience for The Penguin’s premiere. The blend of a traditional medieval setting with futuristic elements in the Dune films, coupled with an intriguing delve into various significant groups from the movies, has kept fans of Dune captivated within an expanding universe.
Dune: Prophecy and the Bene Gesserit
Dune: Prophecy
In the television prequel series, viewers are ushered into a new ruling dynasty distinct from the one portrayed in the Dune films. The charismatic Emperor Javicco Corrino, skillfully acted by Mark Strong, heads this series, which includes several influential houses familiar from Denis Villeneuve’s Dune movies, with the exception of the Harkonnens. Among these new characters is the oldest-known member of House Atreidies, Keiran Atreides, played by Chris Mason.
In simpler terms, the primary villain in the first season is Desmond Hart, played by Travis Fimmel. Hart often clashes with the two main characters who are sisters. His power, which resembles an early version of what movie fans call “Voice,” is a potent control over speech that compels listeners to follow any commands given by the user. This ability to manipulate speech is something we’ve seen in the films belongs to the Bene Gesserit.
The first season of Dune: Prophecy wraps up this coming Sunday, aiming to provide a thrilling conclusion to the series introduction as the Bene Gesserit struggle for dominance over the political sphere. As of now, there’s no scheduled timeline for season two or where the story might pick up after the end of season one.
