Dune: Prophecy Presents A House Harkonnen Like Fans Have Never Seen

As a devoted fan of the Dune universe, I find the portrayal of House Harkonnen in the HBO series Dune: Prophecy to be a fascinating departure from their traditional image. In this adaptation, House Harkonnen is shown as a dwindling, conflicted family, struggling with bitterness, resentment, and a desperate yearning for power.

Fans of Dune are accustomed to the villainous House Harkonnen. They’re the classic antagonists who ruled over Arrakis before it was given to the heroic Atreides, aiming to reclaim it. The household is known for its ominous and menacing characters like Baron Vladimir, Glossu “The Beast,” and the cunning warrior Feyd-Rautha. However, in the HBO series Dune: Prophecy, House Harkonnen appears differently. In this adaptation, House Harkonnen is depicted as weak and desperate, with only a few members left, and plagued by internal disputes and deep-seated grudges.

Among the scant members belonging to House Harkonnen during the era of “Dune: Prophecy,” we find Evgeny (Mark Addy), an embittered elderly exile; Valya and Tula (Emily Watson and Olivia Williams), sisters who forsook their kinship for the Bene Gesserit; and Harrow (Edward Davis), a young, ambitious mastermind. Game Rant interviewed Davis and Addy concerning House Harkonnen in “Dune: Prophecy,” characterized by bitterness, resentment, and an unrelenting ambition to regain their former glory.

Evgeny Harkonnen Is Shackled By The Past

Mark Addy isn’t new to embodying strong characters; for instance, he played King Robert Baratheon during the initial season of “Game of Thrones.” However, in the role of Evgeny Harkonnen, Addy encounters a distinct challenge – that of portraying a character who lacks power, having lived mostly in poverty and exile on the whaling planet Lankiveil.

At one point, Evgeny harbored the belief that House Harkonnen could be reborn through its noble heir, Griffin. However, following Griffin’s demise, this loss has left an indelible mark on him, a wound he has yet to heal. He harbors deep animosity towards Valya and Tula, viewing them as traitors for choosing the Bene Gesserit over their own family. This resentment has grown and festered throughout his life. As for Evgeny’s personality, Addy paints a picture of him as a man whose past bitterness has left a lasting impact on his character.

“He’s kind of fueled by his bitterness at Valya. He blames her for Griffin’s death. Griffin was going to be the golden boy, and he was the future of the house. There’s very little else in his life other than that sort of obsessive bitterness, so it’s interesting to play.”

Harrow Harkonnen Schemes For The Future

In numerous aspects, the young character Harrow, portrayed powerfully by Edward Davis, stands in stark contrast to his uncle Evgeny. Unlike Evgeny, who is often admired and compared to, Harrow has always found himself measured against Griffin, a comparison that he knows he can never meet. When queried about any similarities between Harrow and the once-heir apparent, Davis chuckled, “Indeed, there’s a large portrait of Griffin hanging right in his house.

However, in the end, Harrow and Valya join forces to bolster House Harkonnen’s power and prestige, going against Emperor Javicco Corrino (Mark Strong). Despite Evgeny’s influence, Harrow encourages Valya’s return to the family. While Evgeny is characterized by his resentment, Harrow is driven by his aspirations, as Davis puts it: ambition.

His ambition seems deeply personal to him. It’s not the typical drive for wealth or success one might associate with capitalism. For him, restoring House Harkonnen to its former grandeur is more than just a goal; it’s a matter of pride, and he yearns to be the one who accomplishes this feat. Regrettably, he is the feeblest among his family, which is already weak, and can only deteriorate further. He has hit rock bottom, so his only choice is to strive for ascension.

Harrow and Evgeny, together with Valya and Tula, portray more complex and distinct characters within House Harkonnen than any viewers have encountered in past versions of ‘Dune’. Future seasons of ‘Dune: Prophecy’ may delve deeper into the conflict, disorder, and strained connections that characterize this exceptional take on House Harkonnen.
