Dune: Prophecy – References The Sisterhood Has Made To The Bene Gesserit

Summary

  • The prequel series, Dune: Prophecy, explores the rise of the Bene Gesserit and the era of Padishah Emperors after the Butlerian Jihad.
  • The breeding program aims to create a supreme being with the powers of a Mentat and Bene Gesserit for control and power in the Imperium.
  • The Sisters of the Bene Gesserit refine Truth Saying into a powerful weapon vital for political survival in the Landsraad.

As a seasoned fan of the Dune saga, I must say that the new series, Dune: Prophecy, has truly captured my imagination and transported me back to the vast, intricate universe Frank Herbert created. The attention to detail and the faithful adaptation of iconic elements from the original novels is simply breathtaking.

One particular aspect that struck me was the portrayal of Valya, the mentat, who has always been a fascinating character in my eyes. Her life experience, filled with trials and tribulations, shines through in every scene she graces with her presence. From her unwavering dedication to the Bene Gesserit order to her strategic maneuvers for control of the Imperium, Valya embodies the strength, cunning, and resilience that have made the saga an enduring classic.

One scene that stood out was when Francesca, under Valya’s guidance, faced the Gom Jabbar, armed with deadly metacyanide. The tension and anticipation were palpable, and it reminded me of my own experiences in the face of adversity – you can’t help but root for her as she bravely confronts her fears.

Of course, no discussion of Dune would be complete without a mention of the Litany Against Fear. The mantra against fear is a testament to the indomitable spirit of the Bene Gesserit and a reminder that even in the darkest times, we must find the courage to persevere.

All in all, Dune: Prophecy has been an absolute delight for me as a fan, and I can’t wait to see how the story unfolds in future episodes. And as a final thought, let me leave you with this joke: Why don’t they play hide and seek on Arrakis? Because you can find Melange anywhere!

The epic tale of Dune is expanding into a standalone franchise, offering a new prequel series to complement the existing library of books, films, comics, and video games. The latest addition, titled “Dune: Prophecy,” recently wrapped up its inaugural season on HBO Max. This captivating series delves into the origins of the Bene Gesserit, then known as the Sisterhood, and chronicles the period following the Butlerian Jihad, a significant event in the history of the Padishah Emperors.

The Sisterhood and its followers have not taken on the name Bene Gesserit so far, but they’ve been honing their exceptional talents in truth-telling, political machinations, and assassination – skills that are currently being nurtured under Mother Superior Valya Harkonnen’s guidance.

7. The Breeding Program

A Multi-Generational Plan

  • It took 10,000 years to produce the Supreme Being.

One significant endeavor of the Bene Gesserit Order was a selective breeding plan aimed at eventually creating an individual possessing abilities akin to both Mentats and Bene Gesserit. This extraordinary being would be influenced by the Order, wielding power as the Emperor. Given this, it’s not surprising that only members of the Landsraad were considered suitable candidates for this breeding program.

The initial episode of the series uncovers the intricate schemes of the Sisterhood within the Landsraad, aimed at arranging a marriage and managing the breeding plan overseen by Mother Superior Raquella. Instead of revealing her secrets to her own daughter, Raquella trusted Valya with this information because she was aware that Sister Dorotea, a devout follower of the Butlerian movement, would vehemently disapprove of the thinking machine, named Anirul, which covertly operated the breeding program.

6. A Vision of Arafel

Valya Dubs It “The Burning Truth”

  • AI was defeated, but it wasn’t dead.

The Machine Wars successfully overcame the AI danger, but it wasn’t totally eliminated. Mother Raquella’s prediction before she died about an entity called “Arafel” suggested that they would rise again. Despite her concerns about intelligent machines, Raquella didn’t appear to hesitate in utilizing Anirul, a computer she used for intricate calculations related to the breeding program.

In the final moments of their existence, Paul Atreides and his son, Leto II, faced an ominous darkness called Arafel – a conflict with the potential to extinguish all mankind. It wasn’t until over a millennium after the demise of the God Emperor that the Bene Gesserit, as well as the rest of humanity, would grasp the essence of Arafel.

5. Truth Sayers

The First And Most Powerful Weapon Of The Bene Gesserit

  • A technique that became essential for the great houses

Truth-Telling, as we know it, is found in various forms within our current world, such as through specific interrogation methods or by studying body language. In the far reaches of human civilization, the Sisterhood recognized a greater purpose for this ability and honed it to an almost otherworldly level of insight.

Among Valya’s key powers within the Imperium is providing a Truth Speaker to families of the Landsraad upon their request. In the Landsraad, having a Truth Speaker near influential leaders was crucial for a family’s survival, as without one, they were powerless in both social and political terms. This tradition persisted throughout the era of Dune, with a Truth Speaker always nearby the Emperor.

4. Orange Catholic Bible

Developed After The Machine Wars

  • A fusion of a variety of religious beliefs that originated on Earth

The term “Catholic,” which signifies universality, encompasses far more than just an initial form of organized Christianity as we know it today within this collection of sacred texts. It was devised as a means to cultivate human thinking beyond the need for computers following the Butlerian Jihad.

Members of the Sisterhood typically delve into the Bible, however, followers of Dorotea appear to read it more regularly. Sister Emeline, a devout follower and adherent of the traditional branch within the Sisterhood, is often observed sharing passages from the Bible with her fellow sisters.

3. The Gom Jabbar

Armed With Deadly Metacyanide

  • The famous weapon of the Bene Gesserit

In the thrilling sixth episode of “Dune: Prophecy,” I come across an intriguing artifact that goes by a name unfamiliar to many viewers from the movies – the Gom Jabbar. Despite its unrecognized title, it shares the same design and purpose as what we now know from the films. In my hands, this mysterious device is meant to bring an end to the Emperor’s reign, as I bestow it upon Francesca for that very purpose.

As a devoted cinephile, I’ve come to realize that King Javicco’s reign has reached its inevitable conclusion. It falls upon my loyal confidante, Francesca, who holds a unique bond with him due to Imprinting, to carry out this difficult task. Regrettably, she is unable to complete the deed and instead, it is Empress Natalya who delivers the fatal blow with a needle.

2. Imprinting

A Practise That Ensures Devotion And Loyalty

  • Valya sends Francesca to seduce the Emperor.

In the realm of films, Lady Fenrig was equally renowned for mastering this ability, a skill that the Bene Gesserit order often cultivated to manipulate their subjects. This technique had been in practice even before Valya became part of the Order, and it strategically made sense to employ one of its Sisters to wield this power over the Emperor.

It appears that Valya is leaning towards implementing this concept within their breeding strategy. However, it is the younger Francesca who seems to grasp Valya’s idea about bonding with the Emperor most clearly during the initial conversation among the four acolytes regarding seizing power over the Imperium.

1. The Mantra Against Fear

Fear Is Literally The Mind Killer

  • The beginning of the Litany Against Fear

In contemporary times of Dune, The Litany Against Fear stands out as a widely recognized and influential prayer linked with the Bene Gesserit. Its creation can be attributed to the lethal virus employed by Desmond Hart.

Amidst a harrowing era marked by experimentation and loss, where two fellow Sisters succumbed, Tula and I found an alarming truth: the stronger the struggle against this virus, the more powerful it becomes. Rather than attempting to manipulate the virus, I chose to let it “flow through me,” a decision that miraculously spared my life and unveiled Desmond’s hidden secret.
