As a seasoned movie buff with over three decades of film-watching under my belt, I must say that Mikaela, portrayed by Shalom Brune-Franklin in Dune: Prophecy, is undoubtedly one of the most intriguing and captivating characters in the series. Her complexity and multifaceted nature are a breath of fresh air amidst the clearly drawn battle lines in this sprawling universe.

During its initial season, the show Dune: Prophecy introduced a variety of captivating new figures. Among them are Desmond Hart, who possesses enigmatic abilities, the relentless Harkonnen sisters, and others. However, one character from the series has largely remained on the sidelines, until almost the final episode of season one.

As a film enthusiast, I find myself captivated by the enigmatic character of Mikaela, portrayed masterfully by Shalom Brune-Franklin. Hailing from the grandiose planet Salusa Secundus in the Dune: Prophecy universe, she’s more than just a bartender; she maintains connections with all three dominant factions vying for power. The writers have subtly seeded clues about her past and intentions, but they cleverly keep these details as backdrops to the complex political maneuvers unfolding. In this series where allegiances are frequently shifting, Mikaela is a refreshing anomaly – a character whose loyalties remain elusive and intriguing.

Mikaela the Rebel

On the off-world bar where she earns her income, Mikaela stands out with her striking blue eyes, identifying her as a Fremen, one of the indigenous people hailing from Arrakis – the desert planet whose prized resource has fueled royal dynasties for centuries. This valuable resource is none other than Spice, an apparently boundless substance and the most coveted commodity across the cosmos. The Dune series seldom portrays a Fremen beyond their native planet, except for Stilgar’s (played by Javier Bardem) fleeting visit to the imperial capital in the initial film. It’s intriguing to observe how Mikaela manages in a world starkly contrasting her own.

In Dune: Prophecy, it’s clear that the exploitation of Arrakis for Spice was already an ongoing issue when Paul Atreides arrives. Given her native roots on Arrakis, Mikaela would undoubtedly have valid motivations to desire the downfall of the powers that profit from her planet’s exploitation. Consequently, it becomes understandable why she would choose to join the uprising aiming to overthrow the noble houses dominating the Spice trade. She played a significant role in the attempt to destroy the Landsraad in episode four. Remarkably, she is one of the few rebels who managed to keep their identities hidden when the plot was foiled, following Desmond Hart’s capture of the conspirators.

Indeed, that brief period didn’t persist for long. In episode five, Desmond discovers Mikaela and the tavern’s involvement in the “thinking machine” attack, narrowly saving her life. During his search of the bar, he stumbles upon illegally stored Spice and a Sisterhood robe hidden inside a barrel (which seems an unusual hiding spot). This evidence was enough for him to draw some significant conclusions, leading him to uncover a link between the rebellion and the Truthsayers.

Mikaela the Truthsayer

In addition to participating in the uprising, Mikaela is part of an organization known as the Truthsayers’ Sisterhood. This affiliation becomes clear in episode two, when she encounters Valya and discloses the identity of Swordmaster Keiran Atreides as a secret rebel inside the Emperor’s household. Such an action hints at her allegiance to the Sisterhood, demonstrating her readiness to betray one of her fellow rebels, understanding that it might result in his capture and potential execution.

With Mikaela, it appears her loyalties aren’t straightforward. She has a stronger connection to the struggle against the Imperium than most, considering they’ve been exploiting her home planet for years. Her commitment to sustain the uprising seems sincere. On the other hand, the Sisterhood benefits from the current power structure, as it allows them to secretly influence events via their breeding program and placing Sisters among the noble families. Consequently, a rebellion isn’t in line with their objectives.

In the early stages of this season’s cinematic spectacle, I found Mikaela seemingly serving as a spy within the rebellion, working undercover for the Sisterhood to ensure their desired outcome. However, as the story unfolded, her intentions became increasingly enigmatic. She demonstrated an unexpected willingness to sacrifice her entire operation if Desmond discovered the truth, potentially taking his life in the process, rather than face capture.

It appears that Mikaela is currently still affiliated with the Sisterhood, but whether she stays devoted to their mission or ultimately defects to the Fremen movement remains uncertain. There’s a chance that she might be playing multiple sides, secretly working against the Imperium while also attempting to sway the Sisterhood towards her home people’s cause. Let’s hope that Dune: Prophecy continues Mikaela’s narrative in season two, as she is one of the show’s most intriguing and complex characters. In a storyline that at times felt formulaic for the sci-fi/fantasy genre, Mikaela brought an element of unpredictability, serving as a much-needed wild card.
