As a long-time fan of the Dune saga, I must say that episode 5 of Dune: Prophecy has truly been a game-changer for me. The revelation of Desmond Hart’s mixed Harkonnen and Atreides lineage adds such depth to his character, it’s as if Frank Herbert himself penned the script.

During its initial season, the show “Dune: Prophecy ” has been gradually unveiling mysteries at a deliberate pace, resolving them even with just six episodes. By the end of episode five titled “In Blood, Truth,” the series finally disclosed crucial details about one of its most enigmatic characters, Desmond Hart.

Throughout the entire season, Hart has served as the primary adversary for the Sisterhood, led by Valya and Tula Harkonnen. Their survival is at stake due to his immense power, which poses the greatest danger to them. So far, he’s only appeared in one scene with Valya, but it’s evident that there’s a deep-seated grudge between him and the Truthsayers. The fifth episode unveiled the reason behind this animosity.

Episode Five’s Big Reveal

In episode five, the narrative splits into two paths. While Tula is examining Desmond’s DNA in the Sisterhood’s genealogical database to uncover his history, back on Salusa Secundus, Desmond is growing closer to Empress Natalya (Jodhi May). He shares with her that he was abandoned by his biological mother from the Sisterhood as a newborn, providing a background for his intent to dismantle the organization. Desmond and Natalya share a passionate kiss, marking the culmination of their season-long flirtation. Simultaneously, Tula discovers a match in her genetic investigation: the sample possesses both Harkonnen and Atreides genetic material.

This is a huge revelation about Desmond as a character: he’s the offspring of the two feuding families. The episode doesn’t specifically reveal who Desmond’s parents are, but the most likely answer can be found back in episode three’s flashback to Tula and Valya’s younger years. After their brother Griffin (Earl Cave) was killed by an Atreides, the sisters decided to seek their final revenge on the family. For Tula, that came in the form of romancing a young Atreides named Orry (Milo Callaghan), in order to gain his family’s trust and wipe them all out in one go. Orry proposes to Tula, she accepts, and the two consummate their relationship. It’s possible that that encounter may have had unintended consequences; specifically, the birth of a half-Harkonnen, half-Atreides child.

In episode three, it was clear that Tula couldn’t carry out her mission completely as she decided to spare Albert (Archie Barnes), a young member of the Atreides family who should have been killed during the initial attack. It seems probable that if Tula were presented with the choice of killing her own descendants to eliminate the last traces of the Atreides line, she might not be able to follow through with it.

What Episode 5’s Reveal Might Mean Going Forward

If Tula conceived a child with Orry, it’s reasonable to assume she would have opted to place the baby up for adoption instead of terminating the pregnancy, aiming to avoid any potential repercussions later on. However, it’s important to note that she wouldn’t be able to foresee the extraordinary circumstances her child might encounter in the future. For instance, the child may have grown up to serve Emperor Corrino, journey to Arrakis, be devoured by a Sandworm, and miraculously survive with powerful abilities that he would try to use against the Sisterhood who abandoned him. It’s hard for any mother to predict such an unconventional sequence of events.

Similar to how sparing Albert’s life in episode three had unforeseen results, Tula’s kindness led to unexpected outcomes. Their objective was to eliminate the Atreides family line, but letting Albert live meant that they didn’t succeed completely in their mission. By giving her child away, Tula might have hoped that he would never learn about his heritage and could live a life unknown. It’s probable that Valya isn’t aware of this turn of events, as she likely would have advised Tula to show no leniency towards the unintended offspring.

It remains uncertain if Desmond’s newly discovered family history will affect either his or the Sisterhood’s ultimate goal. For Desmond, it seems unlikely that this new knowledge will lessen his animosity. After all, he has always known his mother was a member of the Sisterhood. Encountering her might not soften his resentment. As for Tula, she may reconsider now that Desmond could potentially be her son. However, Valya is likely to continue seeing him as too much of a danger to her plans, and would probably still aim to eliminate him.

Valya prioritizes maintaining the Sisterhood above all else, even if it means going against her family. She’s using her nephew Harrow (Edward Davis) to regain favor with the Emperor and allowed her great uncle Evgeny (Mark Addy) to perish rather than jeopardize her schemes. Her strained relationship with Desmond is unlikely to change much since he might be her nephew. It appears that the different groups in the world of Dune: Prophecy are heading towards a clash, each too engrossed in their own affairs to notice anything else. Viewers will soon find out how everything unfolds, at least until the premiere of season two is announced.
