As a seasoned movie reviewer who has watched more horror films than I care to remember, I must say that “Dune: Prophecy” is shaping up to be quite the thrilling ride. The first episode set the stage with its chilling and gruesome deaths, but it’s in the fifth episode where things really started to get interesting.

In the premiere of “Dune: Prophecy”, a double tragedy unfolded as Truthsayer Mother Kasha (Jihae) and her intended spouse Pruwet Richese (Charlie Hodson-Prior) both met a grisly end, appearing to be consumed from within. It was later revealed that this tragic demise was orchestrated by Desmond Hart (Travis Fimmel), the ex-soldier, who possesses the chilling ability to take lives in this manner, at the expense of his own wellbeing.

Although sisters and Truthsayer leaders Tula and Valya Harkonnen suspected Desmond of the murders, they remained clueless about the means or mechanism behind such gruesome acts. In episode 5 titled “In Blood, Truth,” they began to uncover some answers with a touch of supernatural intervention. The resurrected acolyte Lila (portrayed by Chloe Lea), revived from the netherworld by Tula, utilized wisdom passed down from her deceased ancestors to solve the mystery. It appears that they are confronting a virus, one that seems to manipulate something deeply rooted: fear itself.

Dune: Prophecy’s Fear Virus

In episode two, the Sisters found themselves in a state of urgency, seeking explanations regarding a prophecy that jeopardized their existence, following the tragic deaths of Mother Kasha and Pruwet, occurring so closely together. Tula suggested Lila endure The Agony, a traditional Truthsayer rite, which would enable her to connect with departed sisters in an attempt to obtain information from the afterlife. However, it appeared that the ritual went awry, leaving Lila seemingly trapped in the underworld, her physical body apparently deceased.

However, Tula persists in trying to save her and secretly employs Spice in an attempt to revive her. In the beginning, this strategy yields modest results, but eventually it proves effective as Lila violently returns to consciousness at the end of episode four. Yet, it’s not only Lila who resurfaces; it seems that the deceased Sisters can utilize Lila as a means to connect with the living realm. Fortunately for them, the one who assumes control is Reverend Mother Raquella, a compatriot of Valya who aligns with her vision for the Sisterhood’s future.

Via Lila, Raquella utilizes her scientific expertise effectively. She scrutinizes specimens of Kasha’s brain and identifies that the harm concentrates around the amygala, the region responsible for fear responses. She recognizes that the damage resembles a virus she had encountered earlier which targeted the liver, leading her to connect the dots. She concludes that what led to Kasha and Pruwet Richese’s demise is an unprecedented lethal virus, yet the means by which Desmond Hart triggers this virus within hosts remains unclear. With this understanding, the Sisters can now focus on finding a remedy; however, the specifics of how Desmond Hart initiates this virus still need further investigation.

Fear as a Weapon

In “Dune: Prophecy”, it has been demonstrated that fear can be an extremely potent tool. In episode four, the apprentices of the Truthsayer are struck by a collective nightmare that comes close to pushing them over the edge into madness, or even suicide. The source of this nightmare remains unclear at present. However, considering its depiction of dunes, Sandworms, and a pair of haunting blue eyes, it seems connected to whatever abilities Arrakis bestowed upon Desmond Hart. While no one is physically harmed, the nightmare could be a massive-scale psychic assault orchestrated by Desmond, or the power that is working through him.

The observation that this virus appears to impact the amygala suggests it might manipulate the fear response of those affected, leveraging their fear to cause harm. It’s intriguing that Raquella/Lila refers to it as a virus. While viruses usually spread via transmission, no one seems to have contracted this lethal condition except for those directly killed by Desmond. Fear, however, can be incredibly contagious without any physical contact. It could be that the method Desmond uses to kill people is not a conventional virus but rather something that takes advantage of one of our most instinctive emotions, fear.

It seems increasingly plausible that the events depicted in “Dune: Prophecy” are shedding light on the series of occurrences that led the Sisterhood to develop the well-known Litany Against Fear. Given that the virus responsible for Kasha and Pruwet’s demise operates through fear, it becomes crucial for the Sisters to find a method to manage their fear response in order to protect themselves. The series finale might offer some clarification about how Desmond obtained his abilities and how they function. For the time being, the Sisters possess some tools to aid them in their struggle against him, which could potentially set up an engaging climax in the final episode.
