As a seasoned gamer who’s seen his fair share of card games and deck builders, I must say that Dungeons and Degenerate Gamblers has truly captured my imagination like no other. It’s not every day you find a game that combines Blackjack with the thrill of a dungeon crawl, all while paying homage to some of our favorite cardboard classics.
Among all the fantastic video games released this year, it’s the triumph of Balatro that has brought me the greatest delight. Frankly, I never anticipated a deck-building game would resonate with such a broad audience, and yet, even distant acquaintances who rarely discuss video games were sharing their preferred strategies with me. Typically, deck builders don’t spark widespread enthusiasm, but witnessing this game captivating hearts beyond my own through its clever use of poker hands and playing cards has been truly heartening.
In Dungeons and Rogue Gamblers, rather than engaging in Poker with unconventional regulations, you participate in a straightforward game of Blackjack. The objective is to amass a total score of twenty-one without exceeding it, making it as easy as card games get. However, simplicity doesn’t equate to lack of enjoyment. In this game, you engage in combat with the denizens of this gambling-centric universe, and the one who scores the highest (without surpassing twenty-one) takes the difference from their opponent’s health points. This feature makes going bust particularly nerve-wracking because every point over twenty-one translates directly into damage if your opponent scores highly.
Clearly, luck plays a significant role when aiming for high scores in Blackjack. To enhance your chances, you’ll benefit from extra cards in your deck. These cards come in various forms, each with unique wild effects. An intriguing early acquisition I found was the blank card, which can be assigned any value. However, it’s just one of many choices available. A card that forces your opponent to stand regardless of their score is particularly potent when drawn early, while a card that locks an enemy’s awkward numbered card in place for several rounds can prove beneficial throughout a battle. The versatility in constructing your deck is captivating, and before long, you’ll consistently outscore your opponent with relative ease.
One fascinating aspect of having various wild cards to include in your game deck is that they’re designed based on actual real-world cards, offering a unique blend of reality and fantasy. For example, a Memory Card similar to a PS1 memory card can help you recall the value of a card from your discard stack. On the other hand, a Get Out of Jail Free card inspired by Monopoly can instantly end a round if things aren’t going well for you. Additionally, cards from popular games like Pokémon, Magic, and Hearthstone are also incorporated (in an unofficial, adapted form). This creates a delightful tribute to the world of physical cards, crafted by a team who obviously appreciate and love this medium.
During breaks from Blackjack games, you’ll navigate through various gambling venues, where you can decide on numerous options. Maybe you prefer using your accumulated chips to buy new cards at a shop, instead of engaging in another intense card game, or try your luck with Roulette, which could turn all basic cards in your deck into the number you bet on. Each seedy establishment offers a range of activities, and figuring out how best to leverage them for success is crucial for a winning streak.
Embarking on your adventure with Dungeons and Debased Gamblers doesn’t end after winning a run; instead, you’ll encounter an assortment of unlockable decks and challenging difficulty modes. Each deck comes equipped with specialized cards boasting additional abilities, such as inflicting extra damage or granting shield points to ward off incoming harm when you strike Blackjack. Prepare yourself for the escalating difficulty levels, as they can quickly become quite formidable – and I must admit, I didn’t progress too deeply into that particular labyrinth.
The game Dungeons and Degenerate Gamblers is an exceptional deck builder, yet it falls short of being the best in its class due to a few aspects. While the fundamental gameplay is straightforward, the wild cards compensate with some intricate effects that can be challenging to grasp completely. Mastering these complexities can feel like a laborious task, especially when facing unfamiliar cards from opponents’ decks, resulting in more time spent reading than playing. Additionally, certain mechanics are not adequately explained, such as utilizing the “advantage” to activate effects, which can make it less intuitive, even though the primary objective of reaching twenty-one is straightforward. This is unfortunate because the basic gameplay loop is enjoyable.
