Since the release of the D&D 2024 update, Dungeons and Dragons has undergone numerous changes. Starting from September last year, revisions to the core rulebooks – the Player’s Handbook, Dungeon Master’s Guide, and Monster Manual – have been introduced. These revised books have modernized and simplified the game mechanics of D&D 5E, essentially launching a new edition for the tabletop game. With a refreshed gameplay system, Wizards of the Coast is paving the way for an abundance of fresh content throughout this year and beyond.

The majority of fresh content for Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) appears as new setting books such as Eberron: Forge of the Artificer and adventure modules like the Dragon Delves Anthology. Additionally, D&D maintains its practice of providing playtest material through Unearthed Arcana. This feature has been a significant aspect of D&D 5E. It offers players an early glimpse into forthcoming elements and mechanisms, while simultaneously allowing the game’s development team to evaluate and gather feedback on these features before they are officially incorporated in a source book. Although most of Unearthed Arcana’s content revolves around subclasses and spells, the latest UA release is poised to bring about significant changes in the future of D&D in a more substantial manner.

D&D’s Newest Class Ends Six Years of Waiting

The last time Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) presented an official fresh class was back in 2019 through Eberron: Rising From the Last War, when the Artificer joined the roster. With 13 classes and more than 100 subclasses to pick from, D&D 5E certainly doesn’t fall short on diversity for character creation. However, many players have expressed their dissatisfaction as only one new class has been introduced in the nearly 11 years since the edition was launched. Nevertheless, Wizards of the Coast is set to introduce a 14th class to the game, known as the Psion.

What the Psion Brings to D&D

As a follower of this intriguing new path, I find myself wielding powers that originate from within my own mind. With psychic magic at my disposal, I manipulate the environment using telekinesis, communicate with others through telepathy, and so much more to assert control in combat scenarios. It’s not the first time we’ve seen psionic abilities grace the pages of 5E; subclasses such as the Psi Warrior Fighter, the Soulknife Rogue, and the Aberrant Mind Sorcerer have already made their mark in the Player’s Handbook from 2024. However, the Psion stands apart as the first class dedicated entirely to mastering this unique skill set.

The Psion at present boasts four distinct branches: the Shape-shifter (Metamorph), the Dimension Walker (Psi Warper), the Mind Bender (Psykinetic), and the Mentalist (Telepath). A Metamorph Psion harnesses their mental strength to transcend physical boundaries, acquiring spells like Stoneskin and the ability to transform their limbs into organic weapons. The Psi Warper specializes in teleportation, manipulating reality to reposition themselves and others strategically during battles. The Psykinetic can craft psionic structures for defensive purposes or offensive strikes. Lastly, the Telepath employs their psionic abilities to bolster allies’ mental fortifications while also scanning enemies’ minds to secure an advantage.

What the Psion Means For D&D’s Future

The exact timeline for the official launch of the Psion in a sourcebook remains undisclosed, however, players can explore fresh playtest content in the interim. Given that D&D 2024 introduced a revised Artificer and Psion within its first year, it appears WOTC is accelerating the introduction of new classes. In contrast to 5E’s addition of only one new class over ten years, D&D 2024 has already doubled that number in less than a year. While D&D 2024 might not surpass the class count of 4E, the rapid pace of development suggests the possibility of more classes being added down the line.
