In today’s world, Chris Perkins is among the most recognizable figures associated with Dungeons and Dragons. Accompanied by lead rules designer Jeremy Crawford, Perkins frequently shows up in videos, discussions, and various media outlets as one of the primary spokespersons discussing the intricacies of Dungeons and Dragons 5th Edition and its fresh content.
It’s sad to say that fans won’t get to see Perkins contributing to official Dungeons & Dragons content anymore. On April 4th, he announced on Twitter and Bluesky that he has retired from Wizards of the Coast. After guiding Dungeons & Dragons through its 50th anniversary and the release of the revised 5th Edition D&D core rulebooks, Perkins referred to his retirement as a “fairytale ending.” Now, as a fan himself, he’s excited to experience Dungeons & Dragons without the responsibilities of being in charge.
Chris Perkins’ Storied Dungeons and Dragons Career
Perkins has been involved with Dungeons & Dragons for nearly half of its 50-year history. He joined the game shortly after the Advanced D&D Revised Edition was published. Initially, he worked as an editor for Dungeon magazine, then moved on to create the Star Wars: Saga Edition Roleplaying D&D tie-in, and eventually served as the lead story designer for popular Dungeons & Dragons adventures such as Curse of Strahd. Over time, he advanced to become a game design architect, and later held the position of creative director.
Beyond his work within game development, Perkins has been a frequent figure in numerous live play streams throughout the years. He served as the dungeon master for Acquisitions Incorporated for an eleven-year stint before handing over the role to Crawford in 2018, and was part of Dice, Camera, Action! until its conclusion in 2019. Moreover, he has made guest appearances on the live-streamed role-playing game Critical Role on two occasions. In Campaign 1, he played Shale, a Goliath Fighter, and in Campaign 2, he portrayed Spurt, the short-lived Kobold inventor.
Although fans regret Chris Perkins’ departure from Wizards of the Coast, they are appreciative that he’s pursuing his dreams, and they acknowledge his valuable contributions. As for the future, it remains unclear if Perkins will embark on new ventures or reappear elsewhere.
