Dungeons and Dragons Players Are Loving the New Villainous Subclasses

Players of Dungeons & Dragons are really excited about the new villainous character classes and abilities recently released for playtesting in Unearthed Arcana, with many calling it the most positive response to a playtest ever. These options are being tested now and are expected to appear in a future Dungeons & Dragons book.

On April 2nd, Dungeons & Dragons released a new playtest document called “Villainous Options.” This document introduced four new character subclasses focused on villainous themes: the Pestilence Domain Cleric, Circle of the Titan Druid, Hell Knight Fighter, and Demonic Sorcerer. It also included special ability chains, called Paths of Villainy, for the Death Knight and Lich character types.

Fans Weigh In on D&D Villainous Options

Players are raving about some newly released Dungeons & Dragons subclasses, with many calling them the best they’ve ever seen. One D&D fan, Deathpacito-01, shared their enthusiasm on Reddit, saying the new content has received an unusually positive response. They even suggested the creators deserve a bonus and job security, praising their unique talent. Their post quickly gained over 500 upvotes and 68 comments, demonstrating widespread approval.

These character options are incredibly thematic and well-suited for villains, anti-heroes, or campaigns focused on evil. For example, the Pestilence Cleric can spread disease and transform into a rat swarm, and the Circle of the Titan Druid can become giant monsters capable of swallowing enemies. The Hell Knight Fighter uses hellfire and creates lasting infernal wounds, while the Demonic Sorcerer channels the chaotic power of the Abyss. The Paths of Villainy feats allow characters to gain abilities and defenses similar to those of famous Dungeons & Dragons villains like Vecna and Lord Soth.

  • Subclasses
    • Cleric: Pestilence Domain
    • Druid: Circle of the Titan
    • Fighter: Hell Knight
    • Sorcerer: Demonic Sorcery
  • Paths of Villainy
    • Martials: Death Knight
    • Spellcasters: Lich

While these subclasses seem great on the surface, they aren’t all equally balanced. The Pestilence Domain is as powerful as the Grave Domain Cleric in Dungeons & Dragons, but the Hell Knight is inconsistent – many of its key abilities only work about one time out of six, and that doesn’t improve until level 18. The Titan Druid can become incredibly large earlier than the Rune Knight Fighter, but isn’t as good at defending itself compared to the Moon Druid. Most of the Death Knight’s abilities are limited by how often they can be used, and the Lich path is almost too strong, letting characters regain spell slots, heal themselves, and weaken enemies.

There’s still time to refine these character classes before they’re officially launched. While it’s unknown exactly when they’ll appear in the Dungeons & Dragons 2026 plans, many fans believe they’ll be included in the next sourcebook, expected during the Season of Champions later this year. Players can currently share their thoughts through a survey for the Villainous Options Unearthed Arcana, which is open until April 23rd, helping to finalize these options before they’re released.
