Dungeons & Dragons recently released a new playtest document called Unearthed Arcana, which tests out revisions to several popular character classes. These include the Path of the Spiritual Guardian and Storm Herald Barbarian, Cavalier Fighter, Warrior of Intoxication Monk, and Oathbreaker Paladin. These classes, originally featured in Xanathar’s Guide, have been updated to align with the core rule changes coming in 2024 for Dungeons & Dragons.

Among all the books created for Dungeons & Dragons, Xanathar’s Guide to Everything is one of the most popular. Many fans consider it a crucial companion to the Player’s Handbook, offering a wealth of new options for both players and Dungeon Masters, including an impressive 31 different character subclasses. It was originally published in 2017.
D&D Unearthed Arcana Updates Xanathar’s Guide Subclasses
Several character classes are being updated for the current version of Dungeons & Dragons (5th Edition). Wizards of the Coast recently shared a preview of these changes, called Unearthed Arcana, which revises five classes, four of which originally appeared in Xanathar’s Guide to Everything.

 - Barbarian – Path of the Spiritual Guardian (formerly Ancestral Guardians)
- Barbarian – Path of the Storm Herald
- Fighter – Cavalier
- Monk – Warrior of Intoxication (formerly Way of the Drunken Master)
- Paladin – Oathbreaker (from Dungeon Master’s Guide 2014)
The Spiritual Guardian and Storm Herald Barbarian classes in Dungeons & Dragons have both been improved. Spiritual Guardians now have more ways to deal damage with their Spiritual Protectors, their Spirit Shield gets stronger as they level up, and they gain a powerful new ability called Vengeful Spirits that lets them attack more often. Storm Heralds have also been updated – their Storm Aura now deals more damage based on their Rage damage, and the effects of their Raging Storm ability have been redesigned.

In the latest updates to D&D, several character subclasses have been improved. The Cavalier Fighter can now freely use their Unwavering Mark ability and gains a speed boost at the start of combat. The Monk subclass, formerly known as the Way of the Drunken Master, now has the ability to create special drinks using Mystic Brew, leaning further into its alcohol theme. Finally, the Oathbreaker Paladin, which originally appeared in a different source than the others, has received a significant overhaul, allowing them to summon undead creatures, combine abilities with Divine Smite, and empower their Aura of Protection with dark magic.
We don’t yet know which Dungeons & Dragons book will include these new options. The subclasses coming from this year’s Forgotten Realms: Heroes of Faerun and Eberron: Forge of the Artificer have already been announced, so these popular choices will probably appear in a product that hasn’t been revealed yet, likely next year. The survey to provide feedback on these subclasses opens on November 6th, so if you want to help finalize them, make sure to fill it out when it’s available.
