Dungeons and Dragons Reveals Villainous Subclasses in New Unearthed Arcana Playtest

Dungeons & Dragons has released new playtest material called Unearthed Arcana, offering players ways to create characters with villainous traits. These options let you explore classic evil archetypes and build truly wicked characters.

In Dungeons & Dragons, “Unearthed Arcana” are official documents released by Wizards of the Coast to let players test out new character options, like subclasses, and give feedback. This feedback helps shape future official rulebooks. For instance, the mystic subclasses featured in a recent Unearthed Arcana document are expected to be included in Arcana Unleashed, a new book scheduled for release in 2026.

Villainous Subclasses in Dungeons and Dragons Unearthed Arcana

Dungeons & Dragons has released a new playtest, called Unearthed Arcana, inviting players to try out and provide feedback on new content. This time, the playtest features four new character subclasses for the 5th Edition of the game, all designed with a darker, more villainous feel – making them ideal for evil-aligned characters or campaigns.

  • Cleric: Pestilence Domain
  • Druid: Circle of the Titan
  • Fighter: Hell Knight
  • Sorcerer: Demonic Sorcery

Clerics of the Pestilence Domain are priests who specialize in the powers of decay and disease, wielding Necrotic and Poison damage. They can weaken enemies with an aura that causes exhaustion, make corpses explode, and even shapeshift into swarms of pests. Druids of the Circle of the Titan, on the other hand, can transform into massive beasts like the Behemoth, Leviathan, and Insectoid Titan. These incredibly powerful Wild Shapes can dominate the battlefield, destroy structures, and even consume their foes.

As a huge cinema fan, I’m always fascinated by the monsters and villains designers come up with! One particularly striking creation is the Hell Knight – imagine a warrior fueled by dark powers, wielding a weapon wreathed in hellfire. It doesn’t just burn you, it actually ignores fire resistance and can send your soul straight to the first layer of Hell! But then you’ve got the Demonic Sorcerer, a truly terrifying opponent who physically changes themselves to fight, calls up demonic helpers, and basically warps reality around them with the power of the Abyss. Both are seriously intimidating foes!

Dungeons and Dragons Death Knight and Lich Feat Chains

This supplemental material introduces two new character options called Paths of Villainy – special sets of abilities that let characters of various classes gradually gain powers inspired by classic monsters. The Path of the Death Knight is a series of six feats available to characters who have the Weapon Mastery ability, and can be taken between levels 4 and 12. As they advance, Death Knights learn to cast modified versions of spells like Wrathful Smite, Command, Bane, Fear, and Find Steed. Reaching level 12 and completing the Death Knight Ascension – requiring at least two prior feats – turns the character into an Undead creature, capable of unleashing Hellfire Orbs, similar to the powers of Lord Soth and Olanthius.

Instead of traditional advancement, spellcasters can choose the Path of the Lich. Similar to famous Liches like Vecna, these characters trap their souls within special jars. They then use an ability called Soul Siphon to strengthen their spells, recover spell slots, and heal themselves. Over time, they can even master classic Lich powers – like paralyzing touch, a terrifying gaze, and the ability to regenerate – making them incredibly difficult to destroy.

What Dungeons and Dragons Book Will This Unearthed Arcana Appear In?

It’s currently unknown when these new character options will be officially released. Although they would fit well with the upcoming gothic horror book, Ravenloft: The Horrors Within (releasing June 16th), that book is already packed with character classes, including popular choices like the Hexblade Warlock and Grave Domain Cleric. Adding more classes to it now seems unlikely given the short timeframe.

The upcoming D&D sourcebook, Arcana Unleashed, scheduled for September 2026, will feature several new character subclasses, such as the Conjurer and Enchanter Wizard. However, options geared towards villainous characters don’t fit the book’s overall theme.

A third book is planned for release in December of this year, coinciding with Wizards of the Coast’s “Season of Champions.” While details haven’t been officially announced, the book’s theme seems like a good fit for some recently playtested character options. Plus, plans are in place to include Lord Soth, suggesting these options might appear before the year ends. Currently, there are two sets of character options without a designated book: those inspired by the Dark Sun setting and updated versions of popular classes from Xanathar’s Guide to Everything. It’s unclear whether these will be included in this upcoming book or saved for a future release in 2027, so fans will have to wait and see.
