Dungeons & Dragons 5e Is Adding New Psion Class

Summary

  • Dungeons & Dragons 5e is playtesting a new Psion class focused on mental magic.
  • The Psion is a full spellcaster with four subclasses and new spells.
  • The Unearthed Arcana playtest document also introduces Wild Talents as new psionic Feats.

5th Edition of Dungeons & Dragons is currently testing a novel character class called the Psion, offering gamers an opportunity to employ psychic powers to surmount the obstacles in their quests.

Throughout the different eras of Dungeons & Dragons (D&D), mental abilities have been approached in diverse manners. In the 5th Edition, these powers are often limited to subclasses, like the Soulknife for the Rogue, which enhances a standard class with additional psionic abilities as part of their regular skill set.

On the official Dungeons & Dragons YouTube channel, a fresh video was posted revealing that a trial version of an Arcana playtest document has been made available on D&D Beyond. This is the first new character class since 2019, named the Psion, and it specializes in magical abilities stemming from mental forces.

How The Psion Works

The Psion represents a unique full-fledged magical class, drawing from the spellcasting repertoire of existing classes while incorporating some fresh spells found in the given document. Additionally, this class shares the Energy Die attribute with the Soulknife, enabling them to roll additional dice to amplify specific actions.

In addition to being a type, the Psion comprises four distinct categories: Metamorph, Psi Warper, Psykinetic, and Telepath. The Metamorph employs mental abilities to transform its physical form, while the Psi Warper manipulates space for teleportation purposes. The Psykinetic wields telekinesis as both a weapon and a protective barrier, and the Telepath excels at reading and controlling minds.

The latest Unearthed Arcana introduces Wild Talents, unique Feats that a player can acquire just once. These talents symbolize hidden mental abilities that non-Psions can access and harness.

It takes nerve for Wizards of the Coast to reintroduce the Psion class, given its history of being mishandled and unbalanced. Fortunately, this new version of the class is included in a playtest document, allowing anyone with concerns about its abilities to voice them directly to the developers.
