As an avid gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I approach every new title with a critical eye and a nostalgic heart. Having played countless adventure games throughout the years, I was intrigued by the premise of Dungeons of Hinterberg, with its promise of exploration, puzzles, and a growing protagonist.
With an overwhelming number of video games in existence, catering to a wide range of challenge levels and themes, there seems to be a match for most people’s preferences. For those who relish a significant time investment to excel, there are games. On the other hand, for those who prefer a more relaxed experience, they can find their fill as well. Dungeons of Hinterberg, positioned in the easygoing realm of gaming, may not demand extensive effort, but it remains engaging and enjoyable.
Microbird Games’ developer creates an engaging experience with a leisurely rhythm, blending exploration, battle scenes, and puzzle-solving. It may not test the mettle of hardcore gamers but warmly welcomes those who prefer a more relaxed playstyle. While some design choices might irk seasoned players, it successfully crafts a compelling narrative and atmosphere that adventure game enthusiasts should consider exploring.
In the charming town of Hinterberg, the game begins by immersing players in the main gameplay mechanism of their “vacation with a twist,” which will shape their daily experiences. The narrative unfolds in the morning, while the afternoon offers options between delving into dungeons or exploring the diverse regions that become accessible. Evenings are dedicated to acquiring supplies, socializing with townsfolk, and enhancing various stats. Certain storyline events occur during the evenings as well, but Dungeons of Hinterberg allows players to set their own pace for progression.
For those unenthused about the narrative, feel free to delve into other areas. And for those who aren’t keen on meticulously examining every corner, you can dash through one dungeon to the next and finish them at your desired pace. However, be prepared for a slower experience in more complex dungeons if your equipment isn’t up to par. In battle, you’ll inflict minimal damage, making it seem insignificant to continue. Nevertheless, story advancement necessitates finishing certain dungeons, luckily, these are among the shorter ones.
In a relaxed manner, the game’s battles incorporate this attitude as well, with light and heavy attacks being the primary methods of inflicting damage throughout most of the experience. However, there are particular spells to acquire which can only be utilized in specific locations or while exploring dungeons with entrances on the same map. These spells can also be employed during combat, although their effectiveness varies; for instance, a massive bomb spell deals significantly more damage compared to others. Moreover, two ability slots are available for players to customize attacks that inflict harm and apply status effects, such as causing knockdowns.
As an avid gamer, I can tell you from my personal experience that many users, including myself, tend to favor a particular pair of abilities or spells that work best for us and stick with them throughout the game. However, despite the enticing allure of additional abilities and advanced combat techniques, the classic 1-2 combination of light and heavy attacks, complemented by a well-timed dodge roll, will remain my go-to strategy for most combat situations.
When encountering adversaries or unexpectedly being surrounded, a fight automatically ensues within a confined space. If there are only a few opponents, the battle is generally simple and uncomplicated. However, when faced with four or more enemies, the situation can grow complex as certain magical foes may swiftly occupy a considerable portion of the combat zone. The enemy aesthetics leave room for improvement, as most appear as ominous black figures. Nevertheless, some boss adversaries exhibit distinct characteristics in their visual design and attack patterns.
Incorporating cel-shading and bold outlines adds intrigue to the visual journey, yet the simplicity of NPC facial features might seem disappointing at times. The game’s diverse landscapes are captivating with their abundance of peculiar flora and rocks. However, some character models’ faces appear overly simplistic compared to the overall production quality. Microbird Games made an unexpected design decision by not enabling destructible items within dungeons unless they serve a puzzle purpose. Consequently, non-essential objects like crates or boxes remain static within the dungeon, resulting in effortless item acquisition as they manifest as floating lights on the ground.
In some adventure games, you might find it unusual that you don’t need to exert much effort to locate objects. Yet, this ease of discovery ensures players won’t overlook many items, as they’re often visible from afar. This holds true on expansive maps too, where finding certain items may lead to additional exploration. Developers intentionally designed it this way, but for seasoned gamers accustomed to destroying objects in dungeons, it might seem unusual not to have that option.
If you’re seeking a greater intellectual hurdle in puzzle-solving within “Dungeons of Hinterberg,” you might be underimpressed. The puzzles here predominantly rely on previously acquired skills, and the solutions are mostly apparent. For instance, upon entering the initial explorable region, players receive a large bomb and a ball and chain to hurl at objects. Consequently, most puzzles revolve around detonating rock formations with the larger bomb or employing the ball and chain to elevate platforms that accommodate the larger bomb’s placement, among other similar tasks. While this straightforwardness isn’t necessarily negative, those craving a mental workout may find themselves feeling let down by the experience. There are some larger puzzles that require more investigation to solve, but even these tend to yield answers rather promptly.
As a passionate fan of this captivating fantasy game, I’d describe it as follows: In my adventure, I come across various objects, weapons, and charms that are quite common in the genre. However, what sets this experience apart is the discovery of items whose true potential unfolds only when specific stat levels have been achieved. These levels aren’t typically gained through combat or exploration but rather by interacting with certain townsfolk. Some of these encounters will boost my Reknown level, while others may enhance my Amusement or Relaxation levels, and a few even raise multiple stats at a more gradual pace.
Discovering a weapon’s maximum capabilities can be a lengthy process, but there’s a drawback: sometimes players have moved on from using that weapon before it reaches its peak performance. This situation results in making tough decisions that might seem at odds with the weapon’s less serious aspects, as players may need to spend time with others to enhance weapons that could potentially become obsolete.
The game “Dungeons of Hinterberg” excels in several aspects. It presents a well-developed story where the main character undergoes a gradual transformation. Additionally, it boasts a laid-back vibe that is warmly welcomed by players who appreciate a more relaxed gaming experience. For those who relish a slower pace, there are intriguing moments to discover as they delve deeper into the game’s narrative. However, for others seeking faster-paced action or more intense combat, they might find themselves less engaged. Nonetheless, for players looking for an unrushed adventure that never feels overwhelming, “Dungeons of Hinterberg” is an excellent choice due to its commendable traits.
The PC and Xbox Series X|S version of “Dungeons of Hinterberg” is now accessible to the public. I received a PC copy for the purpose of writing this review, courtesy of Game Rant.
