In the game titled “Dying Light: The Beast“, over 170 unique zombie character models will be introduced, ensuring a visually diverse experience for players. Maintaining a sense of authenticity and human-like qualities has been a priority for the developers of this game, and the multitude of enemy models are designed to uphold these aspects.
Following some adjustments to its initial launch schedule (initially planned for August 22 and later rescheduled for September 19), the standalone expansion titled “Dying Light: The Beast” is now scheduled for release on September 18. Unlike previous expectations, this spin-off will feature Kyle Crane, the protagonist from the original Dying Light game (released in 2015), instead of Aiden Caldwell, who stars in Dying Light 2.
Dying Light: The Beast Includes 170+ Realistic Zombie Character Models
In a fresh blog post linked to the game’s Steam profile, we delve into the artistic philosophy that shaped the zombie designs in the upcoming expansion, Dying Light: The Beast. Charidimos Bitsakakis, the lead character concept artist, aimed to venture into the unsettling ‘uncanny valley’ to achieve a chilling ‘human-like realism’ that is both hard to gaze upon yet impossible to ignore.
Most of the designs will be dedicated to two primary types of zombies in the game: the common Biters. There will be over 110 distinct variations, making Biters the most prevalent enemy type. These classic zombies have undergone a significant makeover, moving away from their former dry and mummified appearance. Instead, they now appear bloated and wet. The diversity in shapes and sizes among Biters will be remarkable, with certain unique versions presenting new risks and challenges, while subtly hinting at their original humanity, such as reacting in disbelief upon losing a limb.

Alongside the Biters, there will be nearly 60 distinct types of Virals in Dying Light: The Beast, all products of Baron’s sinister experiments. Although not as common as regular zombies, these lab-altered undead offer variety, with differences in both appearance and behavior. Each version carries unique abilities and traits such as spitting acid or demonstrating extraordinary physical power.

Ultimately, it’s the Chimeras from Dying Light: The Beast that will present the most formidable test for players, even though they are the least in number and farthest from their original forms before death. Their warped appearances serve as a grim warning of the peril they pose. To construct these massive monstrosities, the design team delved into medical research on human muscles and tissues, leading to grotesque, skinless aberrations with characteristics such as bones protruding from their rotten flesh, jaws split down the middle, and deformed hands wielding weapons. These hands are not only enlarged but also oddly shaped.
