The following contains MAJOR spoilers for Dying Light: The Beast.
Dying Light: The Beast successfully recaptures the spirit of the original game. It brings back Kyle Crane, the hero from the first Dying Light, and refocuses the series after the second game moved in a different direction. This new installment tells a story of revenge, as Crane hunts down the Baron, who held him captive and experimented on him for thirteen years. These experiments gave Crane incredible, temporary superhuman powers, transforming him into a powerful and agile beast.

Originally, people thought the name of the Dying Light: The Beast expansion referred to the main character, Crane. However, the name had a double meaning. While chasing the Baron, Crane encounters another character also called “The Beast” – someone with powers like his, but who has been overwhelmed by them. Crane manages to subdue this Beast, and discovers he’s actually Aiden Caldwell, the protagonist from Dying Light 2: Stay Human. This development sets up the future of the Dying Light series similarly to Insomniac’s Marvel’s Spider-Man games, which recently introduced multiple playable characters for the next installment.
Dying Light: The Beast’s Ending Hints at a Two-Character Future

A Marvel’s Spider-Man 3 Comparison Raises Expectations
Okay, so it’s not official yet, but everyone’s hoping Marvel’s Spider-Man 3 lets us play as more than one character! After Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 introduced Silk (Cindy Moon) at the end, I’m really crossing my fingers she’s playable. We loved switching between Peter and Miles in the last game whenever we were just exploring the city, and it was awesome. If Peter actually comes back from whatever he’s up to, I’m picturing being able to switch between Peter, Miles, *and* Cindy during the parts of the game where you’re not forced to play as a specific character. That would be incredible!

Now that Kyle Crane and Aiden Caldwell from *Dying Light* are joining forces in the next game, players might be able to switch between them during gameplay. Both characters have unique skills – though we know less about Aiden’s than Kyle’s – and if the game allows free switching, each would likely offer a different way to play, making one character better suited for certain challenges than the other.

Kyle and Aiden’s Shared Future Could Reshape the Series
Dying Light: The Beast has the potential to significantly change the series, offering players more control over how they play. Previous Dying Light games focused heavily on finding and using weapons and gear, but this new installment introduces a much wider range of unique abilities. With both Kyle and Aiden playable, the game could prioritize ability-based gameplay even further, giving players exciting new ways to approach challenges.

It’s still early days, and *Dying Light 3* is likely a ways off, but the ending of *Dying Light: The Beast* hints that future games might let you play as multiple characters – similar to how *Marvel’s Spider-Man 2* and potentially *Marvel’s Spider-Man 3* work. *Dying Light: The Beast* feels a lot like *Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales*, which introduced Miles as a playable character before he teamed up with Peter in the sequel. While we could already play as Crane, the way this latest game sets up a partnership with Caldwell suggests that future *Dying Light* titles could feature a team-based approach.
