Dynasty Warriors 10 Was Cancelled Before Origins Took Shape

This week sees the release of Dynasty Warriors: Origins, a game that’s creating quite a stir in advance previews and early critic reviews. It looks set to be quite remarkable, but for this gem to emerge, the launch of Dynasty Warriors 10 had to be postponed.

In a recent conversation, top developers at Koei Tecmo disclosed that they had been developing a new installment of the Dynasty Warriors series prior to the launch of Dynasty Warriors: Origins, but this project was eventually scrapped.

Out of the Ashes

4Gamer (thanks to SiliconEra) recently hosted an interview where Koei Tecmo’s Tomohiko Sho, Mitsuhiro Ohshima, Kazutoshi Sekiguchi, and Masatomo Ohba discussed Dynasty Warriors: Origins, the upcoming addition to the long-running and esteemed series.

Opening the discussion, Ohba explained:

Prior to our current projects, Ohshoma and I were developing what we called a ‘ghost-numbered title’, featuring a unique concept. This project was essentially an extension of the direction taken in ‘Dynasty Warriors 7’, with a stage completion system and multiple playable generals.

4Gamer inquired whether the game had been definitively scrapped. In response, Origins’ producer, Tomohiko Sho, verified this information.

Indeed, Ohba and Ohshima’s work wasn’t subpar, but as high-end consoles like the PlayStation 5 emerged and we continued to test it internally, we discussed whether we could leverage these specifications to create ‘the optimal Musou game at this moment’. Consequently, the new Dynasty Warriors we developed is titled ‘Origins’.

The team clarified that the concepts conceived for the unidentified game title didn’t go unused, and instead, certain aspects have been included in Dynasty Warriors: Origins.
