EA Game is Shutting Down on June 24

The popular game Plants vs. Zombies HD for Apple devices will no longer be playable after June 24, 2026. Publisher EA announced the game is being discontinued, bringing an end to over 17 years of service for players on Apple computers and devices. Originally released in May 2009, the quirky tower defense game has been a long-time favorite, but EA is ending support for it.

The Plants vs. Zombies games were incredibly popular when smartphones first became widespread, but they’ve struggled to maintain that same level of success recently. The newest installment, Plants vs. Zombies 3, was removed from app stores in November 2024 because players weren’t happy with it. After significant improvements based on that feedback, it was quietly re-released in 2025.

EA is discontinuing support for several older games, including Plants vs Zombies HD and Plants vs. Zombies Garden Warfare. The PlayStation 3 version of Garden Warfare, originally released in 2014, will no longer be playable after April 28th. While it was the first Plants vs. Zombies game to try a third-person shooter style, which didn’t appeal to as many players as the original tower defense gameplay, it was still well-received by both players and critics and even got a sequel in 2016.

Even though two Plants vs. Zombies games recently stopped receiving updates, it’s unlikely the entire franchise is in danger. In October 2025, Plants vs. Zombies: Replanted launched on several platforms, offering a refreshed version of the classic game with plenty of new content. This remastered edition boasts improved graphics, along with features like a permanent-death R.I.P. Mode, a difficult and unpredictable Cloudy Day Mode where plants fall asleep during rain, local co-op and versus multiplayer, and adjustable game speed.

This year, EA Sports is discontinuing at least seven of its games, and possibly more. Several titles have already been removed, including Madden NFL 24 (February 17th) and NBA Live 19 (January 30th). More shutdowns are planned: EA Sports FC Tactical will end on May 7th, Madden NFL 23 on July 13th, and both the 2022 and 2023 NHL games will no longer be available on Xbox and PlayStation consoles as of August 31st. Finally, F1 23 will be removed from EA Play on April 15th.
