Digimon Story: Time Stranger features a large number of Digimon to collect and use in battle. Some Digimon are especially valuable to train early on, as they become incredibly strong later in the game and can help players overcome tough challenges and defeat difficult bosses.
This guide is designed to help players discover the strongest Digimon available early in the game – their ideal partners. We’ll cover both well-known and hidden evolution lines, so you don’t miss out on powerful Digimon to train and evolve as you start your adventure.
Dracomon
Dracomon is crucial for the endgame because you need two fully trained ones to get Examon, one of the most powerful Digimon evolutions. You can raise Dracomon into Coredramon (Green and Blue), then into the Ultimate forms Groundramon and Wingdramon, and finally into the Mega forms Breakdramon and Slayerdramon. Combining these two Mega Digimon creates Examon, often called the Dragon Emperor, and considered the strongest Dragon-type Digimon and a member of the Holy Knights. It’s best to get two Dracomon early in the game and train them all the way to their Mega forms so you can unlock Examon later on.
Renamon

You can get Renamon by evolving Wanyamon once it reaches 380 SP and 230 INT. Renamon is a powerful Digimon from Digimon Tamers, known for its strong attacks and support abilities, and has many useful skills. It can further evolve into Kyubimon, then Taomon, and finally Sakuyamon. Sakuyamon has a special Miko Mode which is an even better support Digimon, with access to many powerful skills that affect large areas using different elements.
Terriermon

Okay, so Terriermon is a super popular Digimon, especially for those of us who loved Digimon Tamers. You can get him pretty early on, which is awesome! Basically, you start with Tokomon, and believe it or not, you can actually *devolve* the Patamon you get at the very beginning of the game to get Tokomon. From there, Terriermon evolves into Gargomon, then Rapidmon, and finally MachGargomon – that’s his strongest form. What’s really cool is that this whole evolution line has a ton of different paths you can take, letting you unlock other really powerful Digimon at the Ultimate and Mega levels. It’s a great way to build a strong team!
Veemon

Veemon is a remarkably versatile and strong Digimon in the game. Players can unlock its three Armor Evolutions – Flamedramon, Lightdramon, and Magnamon – fairly quickly. It also has the potential to evolve into the powerful Veedramon line or X-Vmon, a Champion Digimon with no specific attribute. X-Vmon can even be fused with Stingmon to become either Paildramon or Imperialdramon. Imperialdramon can then transform into its Battle Mode and ultimately its incredibly strong Paladin Mode Burst Mode. Players receive a Koromon early in the game, giving them the option to evolve it into Veemon instead of Agumon, providing a powerful companion to help them win many battles.
Guilmon

Guilmon is often considered the strongest partner Digimon in Digimon Tamers. It can evolve into the incredibly powerful Gallantmon (known as Dukemon in the original Japanese version), and even further into Burst Mode (CrimsonGallantmon) and an Alternate Form (MedievalGallantmon). As a Virus Digimon, Guilmon is very strong and can easily help players progress through the game. Guilmon can also learn moves from the Veemon and Greymon evolution lines, making it a valuable asset depending on how you develop its personality.
Patamon

Patamon is a great Digimon to start with because it has access to strong Light and Wind attacks and can evolve into incredibly powerful forms like MagnaAngemon, Seraphimon, and Dominimon. It’s also a Vaccine-type, which is helpful. Throughout much of the game, you’ll fight Virus Digimon, and Patamon’s evolutionary line excels at defeating Virus and Dark Digimon – though those tougher opponents appear later on. You can’t go wrong with investing in Patamon and developing it to its full potential.
Lucemon

If you’re looking for sheer power, Lucemon is an excellent Digimon to have on your team, and it’s available earlier if you chose Patamon as your starting partner. Players who start with Patamon can revert to Tokomon at Agent Rank 5 and then raise Tokomon to Talent Rank 30 to unlock Lucemon. Lucemon is a uniquely strong Rookie-level Digimon with the power of a Mega, and it can remain that way for a significant portion of the game. While Lucemon won’t evolve further until you reach Agent Rank 7 in the late game, it becomes an incredibly powerful Virus-type Digimon on its own. Lucemon Fall Down is already the strongest Virus-type Digimon available, and it’s not even Lucemon’s final form! It continues to evolve into Lucemon Satan Mode and then Lucamon Larva Mode, both incredibly powerful forms with devastating abilities.
Impmon

Impmon is a Digimon you can find early in the game around the Japan Government Building, and it’s special because it can evolve into powerful Digimon that excel at magical attacks. You have two main paths: the IceDevimon line and the Witchmon line. Both are incredibly helpful as you progress, as you’ll encounter many Vaccine and Virus Digimon. IceDevimon is strong against Water-type opponents, while Witchmon is effective against Earth-type Digimon. This combination gives you a well-rounded team. Importantly, Impmon’s evolution path links to BlackGatomon, ultimately leading to LadyDevimon. You can pair LadyDevimon with Angewomon to unlock the powerful Mastemon through DNA Evolution. Alternatively, following this path can give you either Beelzemon or BeelStarmon, two members of the famous ‘Three Musketeers’ trio.
Shoutmon

Shoutmon is a powerful Rookie Digimon that evolves from Koromon when it has an attack stat of 270 or higher. It’s a strong addition to any team and can further evolve into the Ultimate Digimon OmniShoutmon, and then into MagnaKidmon – a formidable End-Game Digimon considered one of the ‘Three Musketeers’. Shoutmon is versatile, offering evolution paths linked to Veemon, Agumon, Guilmon, and Huckmon, giving players plenty of options. Plus, you can always revert Shoutmon to an earlier stage and re-train it using the DigiFarm.
Dorumon & Ryudamon

As a Digimon fan, I’m really excited about the Jogress Digi Evolutions – or DNA Evolutions as some of us call them – in Digimon Story: Time Stranger. These are seriously powerful Digimon, but they’re definitely not easy to get! You really need to start training your Digimon from the beginning if you want to unlock them. One combo I’m especially hyped about is Dorumon and Ryudamon. They can evolve into Alphamon and Ooryumon separately, but when they Jogress evolve together, they become Alphamon Ooryuken, which is supposedly even stronger than Omnimon! It’s shaping up to be one of the most powerful combinations in the game.

Throughout your adventure, Ryudamon and Dorumon will be valuable allies. Once you reach the late game (Agent level 7 or higher), you can combine them through Jogress (DNA) Evolution to create a powerful Digimon capable of overwhelming enemies. You can get Ryudamon early by evolving Tsunomon after earning at least 250 SP, and Dorumon evolves from Dorimon, which you can find in the early stages of the game while exploring the sewers of Central Town.
