A playable early version of the new Pokémon game, Pokémon Pokopia, has been released online. It appears noticeably different from the official version Nintendo has shown.
The new Pokémon game, Pokémon Pokopia, was revealed during the Nintendo Direct in September and is slated for release in 2026. A unique feature of the game is that players control a Ditto that has taken human form and can learn moves from other Pokémon. While the initial announcement gave off Minecraft vibes, an early version of the game actually looks and plays quite differently.
Early Pokemon Pokopia Had Strong Stardew Valley Vibes
RyDawgE recently found a playable, unfinished version of a Pokémon game called Pokopia. This early prototype used pixel art and resembled Stardew Valley more than Minecraft. Players would assign Pokémon to gather resources and work on farms. Initial reports suggest it was originally planned as a Nintendo Switch game, intended to follow Pokémon: Let’s Go Pikachu and Eevee. The game was reportedly first developed solely by Game Freak before work was handed over to Omega Force, a studio within Koei Tecmo.
The new Pokemon Pokopia game, currently in development by Omega Force, will be a significant departure from the existing version. It will have completely updated graphics, and Ditto will play a central role, with its unique abilities being a key gameplay element. The game will also support multiplayer, and a number of popular Pokemon are confirmed to be included, such as Charmander, Pikachu, Pichu, Oddish, Pidgey, Vulpix, Lapras, Magikarp, Eevee, and various Eeveelutions, among others.
This newly discovered prototype is one of many details that have emerged following a large leak of information about upcoming Pokemon games. The leak suggests the next generation (Pokemon Gen 10) will be called Pokemon Wind and Wave, and will take place in a region inspired by Southeast Asia. This region will reportedly feature islands created using procedural generation. Current information points to a full reveal on Pokemon Day in February 2026, with a release potentially following in 2026 or 2027.
The leak also shared details about the next generation of Pokémon, Generation 11. It seems these games won’t be released until 2030, meaning fans have a while to wait. However, players will soon get a chance to experience Pokémon Pokopia and its gameplay, which appears to be similar to Minecraft.
