As a longtime fan of the Earth Defense Force series, I was excitedly awaiting the release of Earth Defense Force 6 (EDF6). However, my excitement quickly turned to disappointment when I learned that the PC version of EDF6 required an Epic Games Store account for online play.

The new installation in the popular “Earth Defense Force” series, titled “Earth Defense Force 6, has sparked controversy among PC gamers due to one of its prerequisites. This latest addition to the long-standing franchise has caused uproar within its community when players discovered that in order to enjoy online gameplay, they need to link their Steam account to an Epic Games Store account. As a result, Earth Defense Force 6 is currently facing significant backlash from the PC gaming community.

Back in 2022, I was thrilled when Earth Defense Force 6 dropped in Japan for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. Fast forward to July 25th this year, and I could hardly contain my excitement as this action-packed cooperative third-person shooter became available worldwide. Just like its predecessors, I found myself slipping into the combat boots of a courageous EDF soldier, ready to defend our planet against waves of invading aliens.

As a big fan of Earth Defense Force series, I was really looking forward to playing the latest installment, Earth Defense Force 6, on my PC. However, my excitement was short-lived as the game’s launch didn’t go as smoothly as expected. The Steam community was not impressed with the game’s requirement for a third-party account through Epic Games Store. This demand led to an influx of negative reviews, giving Earth Defense Force 6 a dismal 27% rating on Steam, just three points shy of the “Very Negative” mark.

Players Compare Earth Defense Force 6 to Helldivers 2 PSN Controversy

In simpler terms, many gamers drew parallels between the unexpected introduction of a third-party account requirement in Helldivers 2’s PSN account linking controversy and the recent demand for Epic Games Store accounts for Earth Defense Force 6. While the specifics aren’t identical (Helldivers 2 announced the requirement months after launch, while EDF 6 fans learned of it later and on PC for the first time), both gaming communities were taken aback by this development. The lack of initial mention of an Epic Games Store account on the Steam page for EDF 6 added to the surprise.

Some gamers may be reluctant to create an Epic Games Store account to play “Earth Defense Force 6” due to concerns over Epic Games’ controversial business practices. Critics argue that the company pays developers large sums of money to secure exclusive releases on the platform, a move that is perceived as harmful to consumers and the PC gaming community as a whole.
