By this stage, it should be clear that I, a seasoned gamer with a soft spot for quirky and chaotic run-and-gun games, am going to absolutely adore Earth Defense Force 6. Ever since my life-changing encounter with Earth Defence Force 2017 back in 2006, I have been an avid fan of this series, which never fails to deliver on its promise of B-movie mayhem and insectoid annihilation.
At this point, it’s obvious whether Earth Defense Force 6 will be to your liking or not, as the series tends to deliver the same type of experience with each installation. Expect cheesy, run-and-gun action reminiscent of B-movies and a script filled with amusingly absurd moments.
In short: I love Earth Defence Force.
Ever since I discovered Earth Defence Force 2017 back in 2006 through a Japanese import, I’ve become hooked on this series and its thrilling blend of bug-crushing and giant robot destruction. And let me tell you, when they passed the torch to a Western developer for Insect Armageddon, the fun didn’t stop – it was just as enjoyable!
The sixth installment in this sequel is claimed to be the canonic title, but honestly, who’s keeping track anymore? However, it’s more than just an upgraded version of Earth Defence Force 5. This game offers significant enhancements and new content to distinguish itself. It has been available in Japan for some time, and many fans, including myself, have eagerly awaited its release. And even if you’re not a die-hard series fan, if you can let go of expectations for high-end graphics and jump right in, you’ll likely find yourself enjoying it.
For those new to the EDF (Earth Defense Force) series, you’ll encounter a string of third-person missions. You begin by selecting a soldier class and weapon setup for each level. Your objective isn’t only to advance the story but to earn top rank, which grants access to new weapons and enhancements. The more challenging the mode, the better the rewards. However, this also means dealing with stronger, more aggressive enemies in larger numbers. The game has remained faithful to this successful formula since its debut, making it highly addictive.
This iteration of the game brings a notable change for each class through the addition of a new type of throwable weapon and the automatic traversal of obstacles with a simple stick control. These features enhance maneuverability and overall gameplay experience, drawing similarities to modern roguelike games where players re-enter dungeons to upgrade their characters and weapons for better preparation in future attempts.
In this action-packed game, the objectives are straightforward: eliminate every moving creature on each level to protect mankind from destruction at the hands of an extraterrestrial threat. Ranging from colossal insects to towering kaiju robots, the adversaries offer endless excitement as you identify new targets for your extensive arsenal. From familiar foes like giant ants to debatable interpretations of legendary monsters such as Godzilla, the variety keeps gameplay engaging.
As a long-time gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I’ve come to appreciate the rich tapestry of diversity that exists within the world of video games. And let me tell you, the four classes in this game are no exception. Each one is unique and offers a distinct playing experience that feels worlds apart.
As a dedicated gamer, I’ve always found the unpredictability of this game series to be one of its most intriguing aspects. Sometimes, the weapons and vehicles at my disposal are completely ineffective, making me feel as if I’m going into battle with nothing but my wits and a pea shooter. But as I progress and discover new crates filled with gear, I find myself equipped with weapons that make me almost unstoppable. The satisfaction of finding the perfect loadout and becoming an unstoppable force on the battlefield is second to none. Whether it’s mowing down hordes of enemies with a well-timed explosion or taking down towering alien structures with a carefully aimed rocket, there’s nothing quite like feeling like an unstoppable war machine.
The game provides an abundance of enjoyment when played solo due to its countless levels, hidden content, adjustable difficulties, and variety of enemies to eliminate. However, it truly excels in its superior multiplayer features, allowing up to four players to compete or cooperate online, as well as on the same couch with split-screen capabilities. Undeniably, this is the most extensive and excellent Earth Defense Force installment that has been made available to date.
Previously, these games have been known for their rough edges. You may recall my references to occasional frame rate drops and subpar graphics. However, I’ve observed a noticeable enhancement in Earth Defense Force 6, particularly while playing on Steam Deck. The game runs smoothly with minimal frame rate issues and less of the typical lag. Although it remains as absurd as ever, with unpredictable physics causing players and enemies to fly around, cities being destroyed, and screens filled with explosions, alien limbs, and pandemonium, this is part of the series’ charm. Additionally, Earth Defense Force 6 maintains its quirky humor: the voice acting is side-splittingly funny, there’s plenty of cheesy dialogue, shouting, chanting, and singing, all contributing to a lighthearted atmosphere that refuses to take itself too seriously. It’s an absolute blast!
