The game “Hollow Knight: Silksong,” developed by Team Cherry, is simply remarkable. They’ve skillfully built upon what many consider the most adored indie game of the 2010s, crafting a sequel that serves as a fitting extension and enhancement of its predecessor. Much like its original counterpart, “Silksong” can be quite challenging. In fact, it might even be more demanding than “Hollow Knight,” given that its increased popularity could draw in players who may not be well-versed in the game or the Metroidvania genre.
If you’re completely captivated by the gameplay, stunning graphics, and captivating lore of Silksong, yet yearn for an easier experience, it’s worth exploring the mod scene. It turns out that the community has already produced files aimed at softening some of the most challenging elements, creating a more inviting playthrough. To avoid any confusion, I advise starting with the original game first, as it’s truly remarkable; however, if you’re on the verge of giving up because of its difficulty, these modifications make Silksong less demanding, potentially offering the assistance needed to keep you engaged.
How To Install Silksong Mods
Many downloadable files may specify individual setup instructions, however, the majority of modifications for Silksong available on Nexus Mods utilize BepInEx. The installation process is quite straightforward.
- Download the “BepInEx” zipped file that matches your system
- Extract its files and add them to Silksong‘s install folder. I placed “BepInEx” in Silksong‘s “Content” folder.
- Start and exit the game, which will create all the required “BepInEx” folders. You can also create the “plugins” folder manually and add it to “BepInEx.”
- Download a mod and then add its .dll file to the “plugins” folder. They should work once you load the game.
The above was tested on the PC Game Pass version of Silksong.
Stakes of Marika – Rebirth Anywhere
No More Long Runbacks To Silksong’s Bosses

- Nexus Mods Link
- Creator: Kassant
In the game Hollow Knight: Silksong, it employs a common Soulslike approach where rest areas (or benches) act as your respawn point after death. Although not excessively scarce, most maps usually contain around two of these rest spots, which means you may need to traverse numerous screens following a loss. To make things more challenging, some of these resting places must be unlocked using Rosaries, a currency that is hard to obtain during Act 1. Consequently, you could encounter an aggravating pattern of “death-return-death-repeat.
In the “Stakes of Marika – Rebirth Anywhere” modification, instead of being revived at a bench, you’ll respawn from the current screen. This means you’ll come back to the nearest checkpoint where you last activated it, essentially returning you to the same location where you perished. The mod also offers an “off” feature, allowing you to press F8 for a traditional revival at the previous bench used. Additionally, this mod enables the creation of custom respawn points.
Among all the quality-of-life mods for Silksong, the one that seems to have the most significant impact and could potentially keep players hooked despite the game’s challenging nature is “Stakes of Marika – Rebirth Anywhere.” This mod allows players to respawn at any checkpoint, making the game more accessible. If you’re on the fence about continuing the game due to its difficulty, it’s definitely worth giving this mod a try.
No Double Damage
Enemy And Boss Attacks Deal Just One Mask Damage

- Nexus Mods Link
- Creator: Baiker
In a somewhat infamous fashion, Silksong often deals double damage, making many bosses and enemies capable of stripping Hornet of two masks at once. Environmental hazards also cause double damage, adding an extra layer of challenge. Given that you start with only five masks and expanding the limit requires significant effort, Hornet initially appears fragile or weak, particularly during the early stages when she lacks the necessary tools and agility to counteract her low defense.
As a gamer, I can tell you that the “No Double Damage” mod truly delivers on its name, reducing the impact of each attack to a single mask deduction. This modification significantly eases up Silksong, maintaining the essence of the core gameplay without compromising it in any way. While mastering mechanics and staying sharp are still crucial for taking down bosses – they can still fell you swiftly with rapid-fire attacks – you’ll find that mistakes won’t leave you as vulnerable as before. Combos still pack a punch, but since they consist of multiple strikes, their damage output remains the same.
As far as I can tell, this mod does not impact environmental damage.
Increase Player Damage
Silksong’s Enemies No Longer Take Forever To Defeat
- Nexus Mods Link
- Creator: stebars
The enhanced damage vulnerability of Silksong’s Hornet character, compared to Hollow Knight, is further intensified by her requiring an extended period to defeat enemies, often needing 4-6 attacks to kill numerous mobs, even in the early stages. This characteristic mirrors Silksong’s debut as a DLC for Hollow Knight, as the game doesn’t gradually introduce players to the action, making it initially challenging.
Enhancing the “Player Damage Increase” mod grants you an additional two points of damage, making it easier to defeat weaker enemies within just 2-3 attacks. This feature is particularly beneficial against flying enemies that tend to evade after each hit. Not only do common enemies fall faster, but bosses will also succumb more swiftly, as the modification affects damage dealt to all opponents, including bosses.
You can change the multiplier in the mod’s config file, even making Silksong harder if you want!
Double Rosaries
Earn Enough Rosaries To Buy Everything You Need

- Nexus Mods Link
- Creator: BlueRaja
In the early stages of ‘Silksong’, Hornet encounters difficulty locating enemies who drop Rosaries, making it hard to afford various items in Bone Bottom’s Pebb, such as the Simple Key that demands 500 Rosaries. Shakra’s maps and the Forge Daughter’s store in Deep Docks offer attractive options, but their valuable tools can be expensive due to the scarcity of Rosaries during Act 1.
In the game “Silksong”, very few initial adversaries only occasionally give out Rosaries, and even when they do, the quantity is quite small compared to their rarity. However, the “Double Rosaries” mod significantly increases the number of Rosaries dropped by enemies; in fact, they drop twice as many as usual. You can even adjust this multiplier to increase the amount up to triple or quadruple. This modification essentially reduces the need for prolonged grinding during the early stages of “Silksong”, allowing you to access more exciting content quicker.
In addition to Silksong, there are other Rosary mods that are noteworthy. For instance, the mod “All Enemies drop Rosary Beads” alters the game so that all enemies drop five Rosaries instead of just one. On the other hand, “Never Lose Rosaries” enables you to retain your Rosaries upon death, making it less likely for you to run out. Considering that you can respawn near Hornet’s cocoon with the “Stakes of Marika – Rebirth Anywhere” mod active, pairing this with “Never Lose Rosaries” could be beneficial since you will still retain your Rosaries even if you die.
AutoMap
Silksong’s Map Updates Instantly Rather Than Just After Resting At A Bench

- Nexus Mods Link
- Creator: WheresWolfgang
While navigating through “Silksong”, you’ll come across a faint yet haunting melody that belongs to Shakra. Scattered throughout the game, this non-playable character periodically appears to sell maps to Hornet, helping her keep tabs on the various locations she discovers during her journey. Unlike in other games where maps might update as you move from screen to screen, “Silksong” maps only update after you take a break at a bench. This narrative-wise seems fitting, as these breaks provide Hornet with a moment to rest and update her map.
In practical terms, the decision not to have ‘Automap’ can be seen as a minor inconvenience, especially when navigating new areas. Unlike the traditional method where updates only happen on benches, ‘Automap’ provides real-time information updates. Among all the modifications discussed here, ‘Automap’ is the least significant in terms of game transformation, but it does make the gaming experience more convenient without disrupting the fundamental aspects of the game.”
The paraphrased version maintains the original meaning and flow while using simpler language and a more natural progression to improve readability.
Shadow Dash
Hornet Dashes Through Enemies Without Suffering Damage
- Nexus Mods Link
- Creator: Null_993
In Silksong, Hornet initially lacks much movement, but with the acquisition of Swift Step, her mobility greatly improves in a short span within the campaign. This transformation makes Silksong an even more exciting experience as players can now maneuver more effectively against tough enemies and their extensive attack patterns. Navigating through levels becomes significantly more fun once Hornet learns to dash, and the satisfaction of executing this skill is palpable.
Currently, Swift Step is incredibly useful during battles, however, it does carry a significant drawback: It doesn’t offer invincibility periods. Consequently, you can’t evade enemies or attacks without sustaining harm, even with a standard dash – similar to how dashing operates in Hollow Knight. Additionally, coming into contact with a downed boss will cause damage, making this aspect quite influential on the overall gameplay.
The mod named ‘Shadow Dash’ for Silksong enhances Hornet’s abilities, allowing her to dart past enemies without sacrificing a mask, essentially incorporating the roll mechanic from Dark Souls. This modification significantly alters the gameplay dynamics, making Silksong less challenging as it reduces the need for precise timing.
