When Dragon Quest 2: Luminaries of the Legendary Line came out in Japan in 1987, it was a huge hit, though it didn’t achieve the same level of success when it reached North America in 1990. Over time, the Dragon Quest series has become increasingly popular in Western countries. Now, thanks to the Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake collection, many new players can experience the first two games that launched this beloved franchise.
If you enjoy classic RPGs that focus on gameplay over lengthy stories and cutscenes, this collection is worth a look. Especially if you’re finding Dragon Quest 2 Remake difficult, these tips will help you level up quickly. Earning experience can be tedious in RPGs, but these tricks make it much easier.
Using Tactics Effectively With Good Settings
Okay, so if you’re serious about leveling up fast, you really need to get prepared first! The biggest thing is to change your battle speed to Ultra-Fast – you can do this in the settings or even mid-fight. It just makes everything go so much quicker, which is awesome when you’re grinding for experience. Also, definitely check out the shortcuts menu! You can assign your favorite items, spells, and abilities there, and it makes battling way more efficient. Trust me, setting those up will save you a ton of time!
After you recruit Peronel, it’s helpful to add the Zoom spell to your shortcuts. This lets you quickly return to town to heal and save your progress between fights. Even more important is the Whistle spell, which Caradoc learns at level 12. It summons enemies to your location, saving you from aimlessly wandering the world – enemy encounters are randomized in Dragon Quest 2 Remake, like in many classic RPGs. Finally, using battle tactics will help fights run more smoothly.
Taking the time to control every action slows down progress, and players want to advance as fast as possible. For efficient grinding, it’s best to enable the “Show No Mercy” tactic. You can also customize autoplay by choosing which spells your party won’t use in the main menu. Make sure to leave healing spells and area-of-effect attacks – like Peronel’s Bang, Caradoc’s Sizzle, and the Hero’s Stone’s Throw – active. By disabling other abilities, your party will concentrate on the remaining options. This is a helpful feature, and hopefully, we’ll see it in more RPGs.
A Good Early Area to Grind: Cave of the Lake Dungeon
A great place to gain early experience is the Cave of the Lake, which you’ll visit as part of the story. Inside, you’ll encounter Drohl Drones, snail-like monsters that give a lot of experience points – more than any other enemy in the cave and surrounding areas, except for the ghostly Fightgeist. With both Caradoc and the hero as party members, you should be able to level up quickly here.
While the experience points earned are good, the real benefit of the Cave of the Lake dungeon is a special stone tablet near the end. This tablet fully restores your health and magic points after each battle, giving you a safety net and letting you use your most powerful abilities freely. Most dungeons don’t offer a way to recover resources mid-run, making this feature particularly valuable. Though many players will likely discover it themselves, it’s important to know about this healing spot.
Level Up in Secret Area Accessed Early
Players looking to level up quickly can find a reliable spot that grants a level after each or almost every battle. As you progress through the story, you’ll reach Gwaelin’s Gate. A teleportation pad at the back of this area leads to an island containing the Shrine of Flames. Here, enemies consistently award 500-700 experience points per fight. However, keep in mind that gold rewards in Dragon Quest 2 Remake are relatively low in this location.
You’ll encounter enemies much stronger than expected for this part of the game, likely defeating your party with just a few attacks. However, the game offers ways to make things easier. You can temporarily lower the difficulty or even activate invincibility to prevent party members from dying. While it’s a bit of a shortcut, using these options on this island can give you an advantage for the rest of the game, and you can always turn them off later. It might not be the traditional way to play, but it’s there if you need it.
Finding Metal Slimes
Like most Dragon Quest games, Dragon Quest 2 Remake includes Metal Slimes. However, they’re unusually hard to find in this installment, making it more challenging to gain experience and level up. The game’s monster guide suggests checking the area outside Damdara, but even there, encounters are very rare.
Players looking to hunt Metal Slimes can find them near Damdara, just across from Rippleport (where you get your ship in Dragon Quest 2 Remake). However, a better spot, though more challenging, is the island kingdom of Dirkandor, located on the opposite side of the world. You should encounter Metal Slimes fairly often there. This area is good for leveling up, but you’re also likely getting close to finding the Holy Grail at this point in the game.
Let’s quickly review how to defeat Metal Slimes, for both new and experienced players. These enemies are tough – they can’t be harmed by magic, are very fast, and will run away if they sense danger. Plus, they’re incredibly likely to dodge attacks! That means you need to use physical attacks, and abilities that hit multiple times are especially effective. Great options include the Hero’s Multifists, Peronel’s Call of the Wild, Caradoc’s Falcon Slash, and Matilda’s Hypnowhip (if you’ve recruited her in Dragon Quest 2 Remake). Equipping your party with gear that boosts Agility, like Agility Rings, is also a smart move.
Finding Slime Island: Late-Game Leveling Zone
The best place to level up in the game is a special island filled with all kinds of Slimes, even rare Metal and Liquid Metal Slimes! Taking down a single Liquid Metal Slime gives your party around 15,000 experience points! To reach this island, you’ll need to advance the story until you obtain the Moonshard, which lets your ship navigate past the coral reefs.
Completing this task will likely take between twenty and thirty hours, depending on the difficulty setting and how much time you spend exploring. After unlocking the Moonshard power, quickly travel to the Shrine west of Moonbrooke. From there, follow the small canal until you reach a coral reef – breaking through it will reveal the island. Remember to use the same tactics against Liquid Metal Slimes as you would against regular Metal Slimes. Good luck, and have fun hunting those Slimes!
