TopMob reports that Eidos Montreal collaborated with Kojima Productions on their new game, ‘OD’, for approximately a year. Afterwards, some Eidos Montreal developers were requested to relocate to Japan.
Sources have provided more details about the layoffs at Eidos Montreal. They reveal that a game called OD, formerly known as Overdose, was in development there for about a year in 2023. The project, internally referred to as P21, was halted when Kojima Productions asked the developers to relocate to Japan and end their work with Eidos Montreal.
At the time of the request, around 20 developers were working on the project.
In November 2022, early gameplay footage of Hideo Kojima’s project, then known as ‘Overdose,’ was leaked online by a user called ‘The Snitch.’ The leaked footage, obtained from YouTube’s system, showed Margaret Qualley reprising her role as Mama from ‘Death Stranding,’ and confirmed ‘Overdose’ as the game’s working title.
At The Game Awards in 2023, Hideo Kojima revealed the game’s title, ‘OD’, in collaboration with Jordan Peele, predicting a polarizing reaction – some will love it, others will hate it. A new trailer, called ‘Knock’, was then released in September 2025.
Development of the game has faced a few hurdles. Filming was postponed until 2026 because of the 2024-2025 SAG-AFTRA video game strike. Sadly, Ubo Kier, who was cast in a leading role, passed away on November 23, 2025, at the age of 81.
Hideo Kojima shared a heartfelt statement on X, expressing his shock and sadness at the sudden passing of actor Udo Kier. Kojima explained that the recent strike delayed filming for a project, forcing a reschedule for next year, but he and Kier remained in frequent contact. He recalled a lively meeting with Kier in Milan in September, where Kier was enthusiastic about resuming filming. Kojima described Kier as not just an actor, but a true icon, and said the loss is immense, as there will never be another like him. He ended with a message of rest in peace and a promise to never forget Kier.
The exact release date of the game hasn’t been announced yet, but it will be published by Xbox Game Studios.
