This article contains spoilers from One Piece’s Elbaf Arc.
A huge part of the fun of being a One Piece fan is coming up with theories about the amazing world and characters Eiichiro Oda has created. Because the One Piece world is so expansive, fans love to speculate about what will happen with their favorite characters and try to solve the many mysteries the story still holds. While most theories don’t end up being correct, the occasional accurate prediction is what makes being a One Piece fan so rewarding.
During the Elbaf Arc, like with every story arc in One Piece, fans developed many theories. A major one focused on the pirate Rocks D. Xebec and whether he had a son. This arc finally revealed the full story of Rocks, effectively disproving a long-standing fan theory.
Buggy Was Speculated To Be Rocks’s Son
- Buggy And Rocks Share Many Similarities
- Buggy and Rocks are physically similar
- Oda drew them with the same bounty poster
Before the Rocks Pirates were officially introduced in One Piece, a widespread fan theory connected them to Buggy, a character readers first met early in the story. Because Buggy was once a crewmate of Gol D. Roger, just like Shanks, and considering Shanks’ connection to God Valley, many fans also believed Buggy had ties to that place. When it was revealed that Shanks was the son of Garling Figarland, most fans naturally concluded that Buggy must be the son of Rocks D. Xebec.
Let me tell you, Rocks’s sword skills were legendary! It wasn’t about finesse, it was pure, overwhelming power. Every strike landed like a massive hammer blow, just obliterating everything around him. Seriously, the force of it was incredible – things would just fly! It was a sight to behold.
When Rocks was revealed to fans, his face strikingly resembled Buggy on one side and Blackbeard on the other. His wanted poster also looked very similar to Buggy’s. Most notably, Rocks shared Buggy’s blue hair. These numerous connections turned what was once just a guess into a much more convincing theory.
One Piece’s Loki Flashback Proves Blackbeard Is Rocks’s Only Son
- Rocks And Eris Had Marshall D. Teach Together
Fans initially believed Buggy was the son of Rocks D. Xebec, but the recent flashback changed things. We learned Rocks fell in love with Eris, becoming so infatuated with her that he even neglected Shakuyaku, which was unexpected. Since Buggy was born after Blackbeard, it’s impossible for Rocks to have another child. This effectively disproved a major One Piece theory during the Elbaf arc. However, this doesn’t necessarily mean Buggy has no connection to Rocks at all.

Buggy Could Still Be From The Davy Clan
Image by Toei Animation Currently, it seems Buggy isn’t related to the Rocks Pirates, and unless the author changes the established story about the Rocks’ devotion to Eris, a connection is unlikely. However, Buggy might still be part of the Davy Clan. It’s clear Buggy is destined for something important in the story, as he’s even expressed a desire to become King of the World – a title previously held by Davy D. Jones. He shares some physical similarities with the Rocks Pirates and his hairstyle is reminiscent of the Davy Clan.
While Blackbeard’s beard is often compared to the goddess Eris, Buggy’s hair strongly resembles that of Rocks D. Xebec. Even if Buggy isn’t directly related to Rocks, he might be the son of another member of the Davy Clan.
If you become the Pirate King, then I shall become the God of the world. — Buggy to Luffy
Evidence strongly suggests the Davy Clan thrived in God Valley until about 38 years ago. Since Buggy was already born before the clan’s destruction, he could have been secretly taken off the island before it was destroyed. Considering his physical resemblance to members of the clan, the similarity between his bounty poster and those of the Davy Clan, and the fact that Buggy’s origins are still a mystery, it’s very likely he’s connected to the Davy family.
I’ve noticed a lot of One Piece fans tend to overlook Buggy, probably because he’s often played for laughs. But Eiichiro Oda is brilliant at turning expectations on their head, and I think this seemingly comedic character has the potential to become incredibly powerful – maybe even the next big villain if Blackbeard falls. It would be a huge surprise, but it could also tie into the mystery of Davy Jones and create a really satisfying ending to the story.
Buggy and Blackbeard Will Be Allied Soon

Fans should also remember that the story seems to be gradually moving Buggy and Blackbeard closer together. Although it’s not obvious yet, they currently share similar ambitions and have common foes. Both are focused on strengthening their crews, and a partnership would benefit them when facing larger, more powerful enemies.
Buggy now leads the Cross Guild, a group that is publicly targeting Marines. While the Navy hasn’t reacted strongly yet, the recent death of Vice Admiral T-Bone – and the expectation of more losses – will force them to act. Adding to their problems, Garp has been captured by Blackbeard and is being held prisoner. The Navy can’t allow Garp to be executed, as it would severely damage their reputation worldwide.
Honestly, I think the Navy has the power to take down both Blackbeard and the Cross Guild separately – and I think they know it too! That’s why it makes total sense they’d team up to face the Marines. And get this – it’d give Buggy the perfect opportunity to swipe those Road Poneglyphs from Blackbeard and finally make a run for the One Piece! Even if we fans are skeptical about them working together, I’m convinced Buggy and Blackbeard will be allied soon, and I think Oda is hinting at the Davy Back Fight happening again. When they do reunite, the Navy is going to get absolutely crushed, and that’s when the final saga of One Piece will really begin!
