As someone who grew up with One Piece and has followed its journey through thick and thin, it’s a breath of fresh air to see the Elbaf Arc return to the series’ roots. The whimsy, exploration, and low-stakes adventures that made me fall in love with this manga in the first place are back, and it feels like I’ve been transported back to those early days when Luffy and his crew were just setting sail on their grand adventure.

Initially, the world of “One Piece” seemed to unfold as a lighthearted journey of camaraderie among friends, traversing an engaging universe. The initial phases were characterized by fewer high-stakes situations, ample leisurely moments, and numerous instances of delightful discovery, which captivated fans for years to come. In essence, during its early stages, the overall tone of “One Piece” was distinctly unique compared to what it has evolved into today.

Although it’s not entirely negative, the current version of “One Piece” delves into captivating ideas and concepts that the initial phases of the series could scarcely imagine. Yet, there are moments when one can’t help but yearn for what once made the series unique. Nowadays, there seems to be a lack of downtime, exploration, and whimsy, replaced by an emphasis on high-stakes action and world-building. However, the Elbaf Arc in “One Piece” serves to rekindle some of the charm that used to define the show, revisiting elements that made “One Piece” so special.

Elbaf is a Step Back From Egghead Islands Intensity

Softer Conflict and Exploration

Towards the closing moments on Egghead Island, the Straw Hat Pirates narrowly evaded a life-threatening confrontation with the World Government’s most lethal forces. The presence of the Elders, an Admiral, and a world-altering message from Vegapunk made the tension on Egghead Island among the highest the series has ever reached. Consequently, after the Straw Hat Pirates fled and embarked on their journey to Elbaf, it became essential for the story to shift slightly towards a more relaxed pace.

Everything – from plants and trees, to vines, flowers, insects, fish, birds, and animals – is awe-inspiring in its immense size, as observed by Louis Arnote.

As a devoted fan, I must say that the Elbaf Arc in One Piece has been an absolute treat so far. Since its inception, we’ve been granted the opportunity to delve into and navigate the peculiar giant-inhabited island, all within a more relaxed and self-contained narrative context. Moments such as half our crew being abducted by Road, Luffy encountering Elbaf’s prince, Loki, and the crew catching their first glimpse of the land of Elbaf have an early One Piece feel to them – they evoke the same tone while also paying homage to those very moments in the past.

One Piece Alludes to Classic One Piece

Giants Make Their Full Debut

For those well-versed in “One Piece”, it’s no secret that Elbaf, the island where the first giants introduced in the story, Dorry and Brogy, reside, has long been a desired destination for the Straw Hat Crew. Particularly for Usopp, this island holds a significant dream throughout the series. Given this background, it’s only natural that Elbaf would evoke memories and feelings of nostalgia from earlier parts of the franchise to stir up fond memories for the fanbase.

Initially, while Elbaf Island possesses immense power, its atmosphere is surprisingly peaceful. The storyline shifts more towards the joyful adventure of discovering Elbaf, filled with stunning landscapes and intriguing characters, making it seem like the life-threatening tension of “One Piece” has been temporarily pushed aside for some classic pirate escapades. Additionally, Loki may appear intense, but his interactions with Luffy and insights about the world provide a refreshing shift compared to the previous conversations with the Elders.

Elbaf is Far More Whimsical and Adventurous Than Usual

An Enchanting Journey

Apart from that, Elbaf seems to echo the early escapades of the series. The unveiling of the Elbaf Kingdom evokes a memory of Luffy and Usopp singing about their dream to explore the land of giants. Though this moment was fleeting, it added a touch of nostalgia that made the art of Elbaf even more enchanting. Furthermore, by splitting the crew between its seasoned and fresh members, the storyline so far has a classic feel reminiscent of the One Piece adventures.

Most fail to find words to adequately describe its immense grandeur. – Louis Arnote

While the excitement for Elbaf in One Piece may build as the story progresses, it’s delightful to witness nods to its past that resonate with fans who initially fell for the series. Through strategic nostalgic reminders like Saul’s reappearance and maintaining a playful atmosphere, the Elbaf Arc of One Piece might just be what long-term fans have been waiting for. Ultimately, regardless of whether Elbaf maintains this tone, it’s refreshing to revisit what made One Piece so captivating at its inception.
