As a dedicated gamer, I can’t help but associate the chilling allure of dark fantasy with the masterful creations of FromSoftware. Their hauntingly beautiful games transport me to otherworldly realms I’m grateful aren’t my own reality, allowing me to experience the thrill of the unfamiliar in a safe and immersive way.

In FromSoftware’s games, including Elden Ring, a common motif is the decline of characters who were once influential or powerful in some capacity. These individuals have suffered a loss of strength or status, leaving them as feeble opponents for the player to confront. While they may present a formidable challenge as bosses, their prime has long since passed, allowing the player to ultimately emerge victorious against these former titans of the world.

Location: In Mountaintops of the Giants near the Foot of the Forge Site of Grace.

The Fire Giant, unlike other notable characters, hasn’t experienced a significant fall from grace. However, his sad tale is deeply connected to his race’s history. In the game, he is the sole survivor of his kind. Tragically, the rest of his people were eliminated during Queen Marika’s war. She perceived them as a genuine danger to the Erdtree and took drastic measures to eliminate the threat.

On the frosty summits of the Giants’ Mountains, resides the final Fire Giant, caring for the legendary Forge of the Giants in seclusion. Regrettably, his health isn’t optimal; one leg is encased in a makeshift cast which the player shatters during battle. Desperate and weakened, he summons the Fell God to bolster his strength, sacrificing his damaged limb. Alas, as the player character confronts him, this ancient being meets his demise, marking the end of the Fire Giant lineage.

9 Miquella

An Empyrean That Could Have Brought Harmony

Location: Enir-Ilim

In the expansion pack known as “Shadow of the Erdtree,” we gain fresh insights about the enigmatic figure of Miquella. Unlike other characters in the main storyline, Miquella lacks a clear turning point leading him to fall from grace. However, the DLC reveals that Miquella chose a darker path, preferring to rule in a disturbing manner instead of as a benevolent deity.

In the DLC expansion, players encounter Miquella’s crosses, which represent pieces of him, be it physical or intangible, that he has discarded throughout his journey. These crosses reveal Miquella’s manipulative nature, as seen through other characters and in the boss battle where he appears. Previously believed to be a peacemaker who wished for harmony but allowed others to govern themselves, Miquella now aims for complete control over his world, even its inhabitants. This new portrayal contrasts with earlier perceptions of him, as he once had genuine connections with his family and displayed altruistic tendencies without hidden agendas.

8 The Crucible Knights

Once Revered As Holy Warriors

Location: Throughout the Lands Between

In the realm of FromSoft, much like in other worlds they have created, there exist entities that inhabited these places before the player, leaving significant marks on the land. The unfortunate fate of these beings, the Crucible Knights, resulted in them being regarded as cursed. They now live in isolation, banished across the Lands Between.

In the past, I used to view them as divine warriors, bearing the marks of the Crucible. But now, I despise their likeness to the Omen. I once fought alongside them, part of Godfrey, the First Elden Lord’s elite forces, engaging in battles against formidable foes like Fire Giants. Now, they stand alone, abandoned, discovered in various corners of the Lands Between, still posing a considerable danger to me as a player.

7 Godfrey, First Elden Lord

A Still Deadly Opponent, But Past His Prime

Location: Leyndell, Ashen Capital

Among the Elden Ring bosses who have suffered a fall from grace, Godfrey’s condition is relatively more favorable. Despite encountering hardships, such as meeting his demise in the Badlands and being revived by Grace, he retains his abilities, as evidenced in his battle sequence.

In examining his past deeds, it’s evident that he no longer possesses the formidable strength he used to. Previously, he led Marika’s forces and vanquished the Fire Giants and the Storm Lord in epic battles. However, when players encounter him, his axe lies shattered. To muster his final reserves of power, he transforms back into Hoarah Loux.

6 The Godskins

Figures Who Killed Gods

Location: Throughout the Lands Between

One intriguing enigma in Elden Ring revolves around the tale of the Gloam-Eyed Queen and her retinue, the Godskins. Equipped with the Rune of Death, these Godskins pursued gods relentlessly using their blackflame, ultimately adorning their attire with the divine hides they obtained.

In the game, the Godskin Apostles are dispersed. Their blackflame fails to harm Tarnished. This turn of events is orchestrated by Marika, who commands Maliketh to vanquish the Gloam-Eyed Queen. Subsequently, Marika merges the Death Rune into Maliketh, significantly diminishing the Godskins’ power.

5 Roundtable Knight Vyke

The Tarnished Who Almost Became Lord

Location: The Lord’s Contender Evergaol, and the Church of Inhibition.

Prior to the emergence of the player called Tarnished, it was Vyke who came the closest to assuming the role of Elden Lord. However, it is evident that he fell short of this goal based on his hostile incursion into Liurnia, where he used the Frenzied Flame and attacked what was likely a former companion.

Vyke took on the Frenzied Flame to prevent his beloved from perishing, but in doing so, he fell short of achieving the title of Elden Lord. Notably, Lansseax, with whom Vyke was involved, granted him the ability to wield red lightning akin to that of ancient dragons.

4 Lichdragon Fortissax

A Heroic Act Leading To Decay

Location: The Deeproot Depths near the Prince of Death’s Throne Site of Grace.

The self-sacrifice of Fortissax, an Ancient Dragon in Elden Ring, ranks among the most admirable acts. He played a pivotal role in putting an end to the longstanding war among dragons, instigated by Gransax and Leyndell. Fortissax achieved this remarkable feat by forming a deep bond with Godwyn, the demigod offspring of Queen Marika.

After Godwyn’s spirit faded during the Night of the Black Knives, Fortissax made an effort to enter his friend’s dreams in a desperate attempt to revive him. When players engage with Fortissax in combat, they notice indications of his unsuccessful rescue mission. The once pristine scales on his body are now marred, and his lighting abilities have been tainted by the deathblight. Essentially, the player is unwittingly delivering a mercy killing to Godwyn as Fortissax’s battle against the inevitable is unwinnable.

3 Dragonlord Placidusax

The Original Elden Lord

Location: Crumbling Farum Azula, as a secret boss.

In the universes created by FromSoft, ancient deities with divine backgrounds have consistently been incorporated. The tales of these gods transpired long prior to the player’s existence. One such god is Dragonlord Placidusax, who once ruled as the initial Elden Lord before the era of the Erdtree.

When the player encounters him, the enemy appears to be deeply engaged in a prolonged prayer or conversation with his deity, likely due to the grueling fight he had just endured against Bayle the Dread. Although his strength still shines through, it’s evident that he is no longer at his best.

2 Rennala, Queen Of The Full Moon

Once Able To Battle Radagon And Halt The Golden Order

Location: The Academy of Raya Lucaria

As a gamer, I can’t help but feel a pang of disappointment when I come across Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon. The tales tell us of her immense power and fierce battles against Radagon and the Golden Order in Liurnia. But now, all that’s left is a frail and weakened sorceress. It’s hard to believe that this is the same being who once held her own in epic clashes.

Although they had found love and set aside their conflicts, Radagon chose to leave Rennala for Marika, leaving Rennala devastated and fixated on a memento from Radagon. In her initial encounter with the player, Rennala appears dejected and weakened; however, in her second form, it becomes clear that the Queen of the Full Moon possessed remarkable power, possibly due to a rune placed by Ranni as protection.

1 Starscourge Radahn

A Traditional FromSoft Characterization

Location: A portal at the end of Redmane Castle when the Radahn Festival is occurring.

Radhan, the latest creation from FromSoft, follows the timeworn theme of a once valiant warrior succumbing to corruption. This character development has resonated deeply with fans.

Starscourge Radahn was a monster, described as the mightiest demigod, and a proud and honourable figure. He was able to hold back the stars, stopping the various Astel from falling onto the Lands Between and wreaking havoc. However, he met his end with Malenia, who inflicted him with Scarlet Rot and stripped him of his senses. It’s only thanks to the player that Radahn gets an honorable death. The stars are released after he dies, showing he was still in there somewhere.

In spite of this, Radahn reappears in the DLC for players. This time, Miquella takes over Radahn’s actions, possibly causing players to avoid Miquella’s divine ascention and rule.
