As we edge closer to the network test for Elden Ring Nightreign in early 2025, anticipation for FromSoftware’s latest creation is building steadily. While it may not reach the fever pitch of excitement usually seen for a new Soulslike game, the fact that Elden Ring Nightreign represents a significant leap into uncharted territory for its Japanese creators, and serves as a companion piece to the highly successful Elden Ring, commands a certain level of respect. After all, Elden Ring and its Shadow of the Erdtree expansion were FromSoftware’s most commercially successful titles yet, so while there’s a risk that Nightreign might disappoint some fans, it also has the potential to thrill and captivate even more.
In contrast to the Soulslikes that dominated FromSoftware’s previous decade, which were primarily single-player games, Elden Ring Nightreign stands out as a multiplayer-centric roguelike. Players navigate through the alternate world of Limveld either alone or in groups of three. Over the course of three grueling days, they accumulate strength before facing the Night Lord they initially sought to vanquish. It’s rumored that there are only eight Night Lords, but given the game’s challenge and the emergence of a fresh FromSoftware biome in each run, it’s likely that players will need more than eight attempts to conquer Nightreign.
Poison Swamps Are Inevitable In Elden Ring Nightreign
It’s universally accepted among Soulslike players that Elden Ring Nightreign will feature at least one poisonous marsh. Although Limveld is a separate area from the typical Lands Between, it borrows characteristics from various Elden Ring regions and combines them. As a result, players might encounter swamps from Limgrave, Liurnia, Caelid, and other areas in a single playthrough, and there’s a strong possibility that one of these will be poisonous. While the specifics of Nightreign’s map generation are still unclear, it’s likely that the familiar FromSoftware poison swamp will make a comeback.
FromSoftware Can’t Get Enough Of Poison-Based Spaces
FromSoftware’s game design since its inception has consistently featured harmful wetlands and similar environments as a core element. Many games from the King’s Field series, as well as some titles from Armored Core, included areas where damage was inevitable and the player’s health steadily decreased. Over the years, FromSoftware’s action RPGs continued this tradition, although some games like Shadow Tower: Abyss started to introduce methods to lessen their lethality. Despite these attempts, they have always posed a challenge for players. The numerous giant Scarlet Rot swamps in Elden Ring may have taken this concept to its extreme, but the upcoming game Elden Ring Nightreign could preserve its theme while transforming its essence.
How Elden Ring Nightreign Can Redeem Poison Swamps
In the Soulslike poison swamps, it’s been a persistent issue of constant damage and slow movement, but Elden Ring Nightreign brings hope for a change. As you progress one-third of your journey towards one of the enigmatic Night Lords in Nightreign, a lethal circle tightens around the boss fight’s location. However, players are motivated to explore and collect resources before this happens. Given that Nightreign offers more mobility than regular Elden Ring, the sticky toxic sludge might not impede movement as much during your run. The most significant alterations, though, will likely be in the poison itself.
To enhance the appeal of the poison swamps in Nightreign within Elden Ring, a possibility is to allow players to extract or purify poison from one another. In a single-player scenario, characters might develop a greater resistance to environmental status effects, but in a team of three, cooperation becomes crucial to minimize health loss. Leveraging the time-sensitive aspect of Nightreign, an area similar to the Lake of Rot could necessitate two players to lift platforms and maintain each other’s wellbeing while the third player navigates above on platforming challenges. If handled properly by FromSoftware, these poison swamps could become memorable highlights in Elden Ring Nightreign.
