As a long-time fan of FromSoftware games, I must say I’m thrilled to see “Elden Ring Nightreign” coming our way. Having spent countless hours battling fearsome bosses and exploring intricate worlds, I can confidently say that this spin-off promises an exciting new chapter in the Lands Between.
FromSoftware has clarified that the upcoming spin-off title, Elden Ring Nightreign, is not designed to be a live-service game, putting an end to any speculation surrounding it. This upcoming game was recently revealed for PC and consoles at The Game Awards 2024, with a planned release in 2025.
Since making its debut, the world of Elden Ring, created by George R.R. Martin, has spellbound players and achieved great acclaim. It’s quickly sold millions of copies and scooped numerous awards at various ceremonies, with the Hidetaka Miyazaki-led game and its Shadow of the Erdtree DLC standing out in numerous ways from other games. The upcoming Elden Ring Nightreign, another game set in the same universe, seems poised to elevate the legend of the Lands Between even further. By introducing an online multiplayer aspect, it aims to break away from the single-player focus of its predecessors, offering a fresh experience for Elden Ring fans. Yet, while venturing into this genre, it seeks to differentiate itself from disappointing live-service games like Concord.
In an interview with IGN, Elden Ring Nightreign’s director, Junya Ishizaki, confirmed that the upcoming FromSoftware game will not use a live-service model. He explained that purchasers of the cooperative game will receive “the whole package” from the start, where everything is already unlocked. Notably, Ishizaki discussed their choice to create a multiplayer game despite recent warnings in this genre. He noted, “We don’t usually base our game design or concerns on what’s happening in the industry as a whole.” Moreover, he mentioned that the Elden Ring developers believe that if they are passionate about and enjoy creating something, fans will likely share in that experience and also find enjoyment from it.
Elden Ring Nightreign to Avoid the Controversial Live-Service Approach
Instead of following the popular live-service approach in gaming, it appears that Elden Ring: Nightreign is opting for a more traditional method. In other words, this spin-off game won’t incorporate certain live-service elements such as microtransactions and battle passes, which are common in multiplayer games like Helldivers 2 and others. Additionally, Ishizaki’s remarks hint that Nightreign will deliver the same experience to all players, with no additional paid content planned.
In this scenario, Nightreign, being the first Elden Ring project not led by Miyazaki, will transition the renowned fantasy IP into a fresh genre while also showcasing a new director’s creative direction. Regardless, FromSoftware, potentially under Sony’s ownership, aspires that the upcoming Elden Ring game will capitalize on its predecessors’ fame and strive for similar levels of success.
