Based on initial reactions and the ominous trailer, the first downloadable content for Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree, called The Forsaken Hollows, is confirmed to be more difficult, according to director Junya Ishizaki. He assures players that the increased difficulty is challenging but still reasonable and fair.
In a recent preview with GameSpot, Ishizaki explained that it was quite difficult to fine-tune the game after its release. He described the process as “a lot of trouble.”
We realized that game balance is really a matter of opinion. After the game launched and as we worked on the downloadable content, we focused on achieving the balance we originally intended. Once we had that balance established, we started brainstorming new enemies and characters that would really showcase and take advantage of those changes.
It’s natural for a new challenge to be more difficult – as seen in Elden Ring’s expansion, Shadow of the Erdtree. But the team behind Nightreign wants The Forsaken Hollows to be accessible, not so challenging that newcomers are turned off. They also believe that even experienced players will find plenty to master.
Players who are already familiar with the main game will experience a similar sense of discovery in the DLC as they did when they first played Nightreign, still figuring things out as they go.
On December 4th, a new update for Elden Ring called Nightreign – The Forsaken Hollows will be released. This update introduces two new characters you can play as: the Scholar, who provides support, and the Undertaker, who deals a lot of damage. Players will also face two new bosses on Night 3, including a challenging group called The Balancers – seven flying warriors that attack simultaneously. Finally, a new area type, The Great Hollows, is being added, featuring unique goals to complete.
