As a seasoned traveler of the Lands Between and a connoisseur of all things epic, I must say that each of these legendary boss fights has left an indelible mark on my journey. From the cosmic abyss that is Astel, Naturalborn of the Void, to the divine dance with Godfrey, First Elden Lord, each battle has been a testament to the grandeur and intricacy of FromSoftware’s world-building.

In Elden Ring, there’s an impressive number of challenging boss encounters. While some bosses may seem familiar due to being revisited or redesigned from previous From Software games (a nod to Erdtree Avatars), the majority of these battles stand out for their exceptional design and mechanics.

In the main version of the game itself, there are numerous interactions that left us in awe of Elden Ring’s distinctiveness and creativity, particularly as a Souls series title. Having delved deeply into the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC expansion, it seemed fitting to reminisce on the various bosses this game presents and discuss those who were most memorable upon our initial encounter. So, let’s dive right in! Here’s a look at the epic battles we faced.

10 Midra Lord Of Frenzied Flame

Legendary Boss of Midra’s Manse & The Abyssal Woods

Elden Ring: The Most Epic Boss Fights In The Game

Instead of beginning with the standard game bosses, let’s kick things off by tackling some of the DLC bosses from Shadow of the Erdtree first. This should add an extra layer of excitement! As for the DLC, it boasts a number of thrilling boss encounters, but Midra: Lord of Frenzied Flame stands out as particularly epic. The allure of this battle lies in the enigmatic nature of the Frenzied Flame and the intriguing buildup to the fight, which takes place within Midra’s Manse and the surrounding Abyssal Woods.

One captivating aspect of Elden Ring that fans have strongly connected with is The Three Fingers and the Frenzied Flame along with everything associated with it. Engaging someone who has completely immersed themselves in its chaos presents a fascinating idea. Moreover, the battle itself stands out as exceptional due to Midra’s attacks timing being erratic, his moves unpredictable, and the music during this confrontation being simply magnificent. Despite Midra being one of the more accessible ‘large’ battles in Shadow of the Erdtree, his fight is particularly notable for its lasting impact.

9 Bayle The Dread

Legendary Boss of the Jagged Peak

Elden Ring: The Most Epic Boss Fights In The Game

In my gaming journey through Elden Ring, I’ve encountered a plethora of dragons, from those roaming the open world to bosses in specific regions and even Remembrance bosses. Battles with dragons are a common occurrence as you traverse this game, and that trend continues even in the DLC. The Jagged Peak area is essentially one long string of fights against Drakes and Dragons. Atop this mountain lies Bayle the Dread, the apex dragon, who is infamous for having faced off against one of the previous Elden Lords, Dragonlord Placidusax.

As a gamer, let me tell you, taking on Bayle in the DLC is one of the toughest fights I’ve ever encountered, and it’s also one of the most visually stunning. His attacks are so extravagant they border on the ridiculous, and this is even more apparent during his second phase. To make things even more intense, there are the interactions with Igon that add another layer of complexity to this epic battle. No wonder Bayle is considered one of the ‘epic’ battles in Elden Ring!

8 Messmer the Impaler & Base Serpent Messmer

Legendary Boss of the Shadow Keep

Elden Ring: The Most Epic Boss Fights In The Game

Although Messmer is heavily featured in the promotions for Elden Ring’s Shadow of the Erdtree DLC, it’s important to clarify that he isn’t the final boss of this expansion. Instead, he’s a tragic figure who was born under a curse, became a devoted soldier following his mother’s orders, and was later discarded once he fulfilled his role. In the grand scheme of the Tarnished’s adventure through the Shadow Lands, Messmer essentially functions as a spark to ignite the Tarnished’s path towards Enir Illim.

To put it another way, the showdown against Messmer is truly remarkable. He’s undeniably one of the agile bosses in the game, boasting some of the most visually captivating attacks. His second phase is so visually stimulating that it might distract you from the actual attacks. The colossal snakes that Messmer summons during the battle (particularly in phase 2) are simply spectacular when it comes to attack finesse, and that’s not even mentioning Messmer’s own spear attack animations.

7 Metyr, the Mother of Fingers

Legendary Boss of the Finger Ruins of Miyr

Elden Ring: The Most Epic Boss Fights In The Game

It’s finally time to talk about probably the ‘weirdest’ boss in Elden Ring’s DLC, Metyr. Metyr is the Mother of Fingers, and yes that includes all of the different Two Fingers that the Empyreans have. Metyr is, like Astel, a creature who came to the Lands Between on/as a meteorite, but Metyr came as the first proxy of the Greater Will. However, Metyr soon lost all contact with the Greater Will and has been basically working off an ‘un-updated script’ of sorts since then which means everything that the Finger Readers gleaned from the Two Fingers is very likely info not from the Greater Will but from a Metyr sunken in loneliness and madness.

In terms of boss battles, Metyr is simply amazing! Your journey to reach this epic confrontation begins with a questline led by Count Ymir and takes you through the ominous Finger Ruins scattered across the Shadow Lands. Once you’ve completed that, prepare for an exhilarating descent beneath the Cathedral of Manus Metyr, where you’ll square off against… well, Metyr herself! The battle arena is visually striking, giving off a familiar vibe similar to the Lake of Ash region from the original Dark Souls game. However, the actual mechanics of this boss fight are otherworldly, particularly during Metyr’s second phase transformation. To sum it up, this fight stands out as one of the most unforgettable encounters in Shadow of the Erdtree, if not in Elden Ring as a whole.

6 Promised Consort Radahn & Radahn, Consort of Miquella

The Legendary Boss of Enir Ilim

Elden Ring: The Most Epic Boss Fights In The Game

To wrap things up (particularly for the DLC bosses), we encounter the nearly penultimate boss battle in the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC, titled Promised Consort Radahn. This battle is arguably one of the most visually extravagant confrontations From Software has ever created, and this description can be taken as both a compliment and a criticism. The sheer amount of activity in this fight, especially during the second phase, is overwhelming. It’s extremely challenging, even brutally so, and some of the attacks in the second phase might seem excessive or ‘unfair’. Nonetheless, in terms of an epic boss fight, it may outshine even the battle against Radagon and the Elden Beast. Here, the player character faces a prime version of Radahn and Miquella who has just achieved godhood.

Beating this boss battle is no less than an incredible feat for many (including myself), but when players do manage it, they are rewarded with the Remembrance of a Deity and Noble, an item that can be used to craft two distinct Greatsword collections or even Miquella’s unique Light of Miquella Spell.

5 Starscourge Radahn

Legendary Fight of Redmane Castle

Elden Ring: The Most Epic Boss Fights In The Game

Engaging Starscourge Radahn in Elden Ring is likely one of the game’s most awe-inspiring instances of an ‘epic’ showdown, for numerous compelling reasons. The lead-up to this battle, encompassing the festivities preceding your encounter with Radahn and the gradual revelation of his backstory – a tale of him holding back the stars despite being consumed by Scarlet Rot – significantly amplifies the epic nature of the fight.

1. As soon as players step into the arena and engage in combat, it’s apparent that this isn’t your typical boss battle due to their ability to call upon various NPCs for assistance. Moreover, before confronting him directly, they must journey all the way to Radahn to initiate the fight. Lastly, his signature move – the comet attack – is performed just before he reaches half health, a maneuver that has been repeated frequently throughout both the main game and its DLC because of its iconic status in Elden Ring.

4 Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon

Legendary Boss of Raya Lucaria Academy

Elden Ring: The Most Epic Boss Fights In The Game

Following is Queen Rennala of the Full Moon, who serves as the next boss in our encounter. The mechanical aspect of her battle can seem dull or even frustrating at times, especially when managing the chaotic elements during the initial phase. It can be quite tiresome to barely miss dealing enough damage to progress beyond this phase and needing to silence those singing children an additional three times. However, there’s intrigue in the storyline and atmosphere of this first phase that is worth noting.

The second stage, on the other hand, boasts breathtaking beauty, primarily due to its unique arena design. Furthermore, this segment of the boss battle proves quite demanding, particularly for players who rely on magic attacks. Notably, Rennala shows near immunity to magic damage. However, when players uncover the true backstory of this second stage from Ranni – that Rennala’s second form is actually an automated deception devised by Ranni to protect her mother – it heightens rather than diminishes the scale of the combat encounter.

3 Astel, Naturalborn of the Void

Legendary Boss of the Grand Cloister

Elden Ring: The Most Epic Boss Fights In The Game

In this battle, even without prior knowledge about Astel, the Void-born, it’s clear that we’re witnessing an epic fight. The location of Astel and the eerie, cosmic setting of the arena contribute to this, but what truly sets it apart is Astel’s unique design. This creature appears as if it was plucked straight from a dark fantasy tale, and surprisingly, its design seems more fitting for a boss in Bloodborne rather than Elden Ring.

After players familiarize themselves with Astel’s backstory by reading the appropriate item descriptions, they gain a deeper appreciation for the battle, whether it’s during or after the fight. Moreover, though the part of the boss battle where Astel creates black holes and hurls meteors at the Tarnished can be frustrating to handle, it’s one of the most spectacular attacks in the game visually.

2 The Beast Clergyman & Maliketh, The Black Blade

Legendary Boss of Crumbling Farum Azula

Elden Ring: The Most Epic Boss Fights In The Game

Engaging the wielder of Fated Demise was bound to be an extraordinary battle from the start, there’s no arguing that. But what truly elevated the encounter was the revelation that the Clergyman of the Beast, whom players had been supplying with Deathroot, was none other than Maliketh, the Darkblade. Even though this link might seem apparent to some after numerous playthroughs or for those already familiar with Elden Ring, many players didn’t make this connection until they met Maliketh in Crumbling Farum Azula for the first time during gameplay.

1. The battle itself may lack cosmic collapses or grandiose backdrops, but it’s still quite epic. When Maliketh completely metamorphoses during the second phase and begins wielding Death against the Uncharted, it’s downright frightening.

1 Godfrey, First Elden Lord & Hoarah Loux, Warrior

Legendary Boss of Leyndell, the Ashen Capital

Elden Ring: The Most Epic Boss Fights In The Game

As a gamer, I must confess that my duel against Godfrey, the First Elden Lord, and Hoarah Loux stands out among many others for its sheer brilliance. It offers everything you could ask for in a battle – tension, style, lore depth, unexpected twists, and above all, the mechanics of an epic fight. Once you master the rhythm of Godfrey’s boss encounter, it transforms into a mesmerizing dance, with his ‘stomps’ serving as beats in a complex pattern or melody.

Furthermore, the second phase intensifies the battle to an even higher level, amplifying the fantastic aspects of the fight that were already present. However, it becomes slightly disheartening that the final showdown against the Elden Beast falls short on delivering a satisfying mechanical experience.
