Everyone talks about how dark and heavy The Last of Us Part 2 is, but I recently noticed something surprising while replaying it. In an earlier flashback scene, Ellie makes a joke that sounds a lot like the popular internet meme “6-7.” It was unexpected to find a reference to such a current meme in the game, but there it was!
If you haven’t heard of it, “6-7” was a huge meme among younger internet users in 2025. It doesn’t really mean anything specific – it’s more of an inside joke. Basically, if you see those numbers together, a group of teens might react excitedly. It’s something you either get or you don’t! Interestingly, a joke from the character Ellie in the game The Last of Us Part 2 sounds a lot like the “6-7” meme. While the game came out years before the meme became popular, the similarity is pretty noticeable, especially considering the scene it appears in.
“6-7” may ultimately originate from the Skrilla song “Doot Doot (6 7).”
The Last of Us Part 2 Has Its Very Own “6-7” Joke
People often point out how The Simpsons seems to predict things that later happen in real life, leading to lots of online theories. But The Last of Us Part 2 feels like an unlikely source for a similar moment. The game includes a “6-7” reference during a flashback scene where Ellie and Joel are in an abandoned museum – you can find it around the 4-minute mark in the linked video.
As Ellie and Joel come across a moon statue, Ellie playfully teases him about how often people have visited the moon.
Ellie: “You know how many times we’ve been to the moon?”
Joel: “Uh, twice?”
Ellie: “Six times.”
Joel: “Are you sure?”
Ellie: “Yeah, I’m sure. I’m gonna make it seven.”
One of the most touching parts of the game feels even more fitting now, realizing Ellie would have probably been a fan of the “6-7” meme. The flashback shows her at exactly the age when people were obsessed with it, so it’s amusing to think that even in a post-apocalyptic world, the meme somehow survived. When Ellie says, “I’m gonna make it seven,” she delivers the line with a playful tone, almost as if she’s making a joke. Humor is a key part of Ellie’s personality in The Last of Us games, showing how she deals with difficult circumstances, and it’s interesting to consider that the “6-7” meme could now unintentionally add to that coping mechanism.
Ellie’s “6-7” Joke May Not Have Been Planned, But it’s a Great Coincidence
It’s highly unlikely Naughty Dog could have predicted that lines from Ellie’s dialogue would become a popular meme. In fact, that’s what makes it so amusing! It’s a surprisingly funny coincidence that she seems to be using current slang, and a lot of things had to align perfectly for that to happen.
Okay, so people either think the whole “6-7” thing is dumb, or they see it as something that really gets our generation. It’s totally goofy, and that’s kind of the joke! What makes it weirdly cool is that Ellie’s age actually lines up with the people who started using the term. So, when you see it in that museum section of The Last of Us Part 2, it’s this strange, self-aware moment – like the game is winking at you.
