Below you will find spoilers for Season 2 of The Last of Us. The first episode of this season left viewers in shock with one of the most gruesome and emotionally charged episodes in recent memory. The premiere’s ending was particularly distressing, and while many suspected something terrible was about to happen, few anticipated it would be so brutal. In the second episode, not only did Joel meet his untimely demise, but it also portrayed the lengths people will go to avenge the loss of their loved ones.
One significant aspect of the series was how ruthlessly Abby sought to harm Joel before ultimately taking his life. In the opening episode, she made it clear that she intended to kill him painfully, and that’s exactly what transpired. However, this act became even more heart-wrenching when Ellie witnessed Joel’s gruesome death. Now, Ellie must find strength to avenge Joel’s demise, which is the focus of the third episode. This journey she embarks on mirrors Abby’s in many ways. Will the people of Jackson aid her, or will she be forced to carry out this mission alone? Let’s explore what unfolds in Episode 3 of The Last of Us Season 2.
Unsurpringly, Ellie Is Still Having Nightmares About Joel’s Brutal Death In The Last of Us
In the third installment of The Last of Us Season 2, we pick up immediately following the heart-wrenching demise of Joel, portrayed by Pedro Pascal, and the gruesome incident that unfolded in Jackson. It appears Joel’s remains have been returned to Jackson, where they are kept among those who perished during the struggle against the infected. Upon learning about his brother’s passing, Tommy (played by Gabriel Luna) sits beside the lifeless body, shedding tears as he tenderly cleans it. He gazes at the watch that Joel wore and murmurs a message to Sarah, Joel’s daughter, who succumbed to fatal injuries amidst the pandemonium caused by the Cordyceps fungus outbreak.
Meanwhile, Ellie has been hospitalized due to her injuries, receiving treatment. Besides her, the medical team and Jackson’s residents are assisting those hurt during the attack. Not long after, Ellie regained consciousness and witnessed the chaos unfolding. Although the doctors advised her to proceed cautiously, she appeared distressed, as it’s no wonder given that she had just watched someone who was not only a savior but also a father figure, perish before her eyes. As she stared ahead, fragments of Abby (portrayed by Kaitlyn Dever) brutally killing Joel with a golf club and her subsequent screams flashed across Ellie’s mind. The medical staff attempted to soothe her, but when they realized their efforts were in vain, they administered sedatives.
Dina Tells A Shocking Truth About [Spoiler], While The WLF Unleashes Chaos

Three months on, Jackson is back to its usual rhythm as residents work tirelessly to restore their community. Yet, Ellie remains hospitalized, under the care of her doctor, yearning for release and a chance to take that final test before departing. As soon as the physician steps out, Gail (portrayed by Catherine O’Hara) enters, inquiring about Ellie’s wellbeing. Ellie confesses her longing for Joel and acknowledges her harshness towards him. Gail probes further, asking about their last meeting and whether they spoke. Ellie recounts spotting Joel on the porch following New Year’s, but choosing not to approach him. The discussion then unfolds with Gail disclosing Joel’s possible misdeeds as per his final conversation with the therapist. Ellie expresses that she doesn’t feel mistreated and is eager to leave the hospital immediately. With Gail’s approval, Ellie exits the hospital and heads straight to Joel’s residence. Upon arrival, she rummages through his belongings, unable to hold back her emotions as tears stream down while clutching one of his shirts.
After hearing Dina’s voice, played by Isabel Merced, Ellie found herself wiping away tears as she ventured into the living room. There, at the extended dining table, Dina pushed a box of homemade cookies towards Ellie and shared that she had baked them especially for her. Ellie felt a mix of happiness and bewilderment, promptly asking if there was a particular reason for this gesture. Dina explained that she wanted to tell Ellie something that might upset her, but the doctors advised against shocking her. She also revealed that if she had disclosed certain information about Joel’s killers, Ellie would have likely removed her medical tubes and embarked on a quest for revenge.
Ellie became incredibly angry upon learning this new information, and she informed Dina that her actions had wasted valuable time. However, Ellie recognized that Dina needed to be fully ready before taking their revenge. Eventually, Dina disclosed the identities of the individuals who were at the cabin, revealing that Abby was the one who committed the murder. Furthermore, Dina mentioned that these people were part of the Washington Liberation Front (WLF) and were headed to Seattle. In the interim, the audience watches as the Seraphites attempt to move locations and discuss their prophet. As they relocate, one of the Seraphites uses whistling to signal others about a potential danger, causing them to seek shelter. When a young girl inquires if demons are chasing them, her father explains that they’re not demons but wolves – essentially implying that members of the WLF were pursuing them. To summarize, Ellie learned that the Washington Liberation Front was following them, not demons.
Ellie Pleads For Help From Members Of Jackson To Avenge Joel’s Death

In Jackson, Ellie realized she needed Tommy’s aid to seek justice for Joel’s death. She envisioned some of their strongest warriors joining her on the journey to Seattle, to settle matters with Abby and her followers. Tommy promised to discuss this urgently with Maria and prioritize it within the council. Before concluding their talk, Tommy revealed the location where they buried Joel, suggesting Ellie should visit him there. However, Ellie planned to do so only before departing for Seattle. Meanwhile, Ellie was preparing for a battle and practicing with Jesse (portrayed by Young Mazino). Given that Jesse sat on the council, she sought his assistance during the vote. Jesse advised her to pen down her feelings as anger might negatively impact the voting process.
At the meeting, it appeared that everyone felt it was premature to dispatch individuals to aid Seattle’s rebuilding efforts. However, Ellie passionately expressed her feelings, making it clear she sought justice rather than revenge. She also stated that if they ever needed help, she would be ready without hesitation. In the end, the council decided against sending their top 16 members to Seattle, a decision that left Ellie disheartened.
How Did Episode 3 Of The Last of Us Season 2 End?

Towards the end of the episode, Ellie was gearing up to depart from Jackson, setting things in motion for her trip to Seattle. Just as she was about to embark on this journey, there came a knock at the door – it was Dina who had arrived to discuss something with her. Ellie tried to discourage her from changing her mind, but Dina wasn’t there to dissuade. Instead, she proposed joining Ellie on this adventure. This led to them discussing various strategies for reaching Seattle via the “forest” route. Dina emphasized that they would require additional supplies and a good stockpile of weapons, as they could encounter infected or dangerous animals along the way. She requested that they meet at the East Gate, and hinted that someone else might be there to offer help.
At the Eastern gate, Ellie spots Seth (portrayed by Robert John Burke) entering alongside Dina, bringing a sniper rifle that would aid them in their trek. They set off for Seattle, pausing in a woodland thicket when it began to pour. The following morning, they resumed their trip and stumbled upon a deceased individual. Upon examination, the corpse was identified as a Seraphite, and Dina uncovered that the entire cavalry had been wiped out, including innocent children. Stricken by the grisly spectacle, they pressed on towards Seattle, ending the episode with the Washington Liberation Front (WLF) members presumably venturing out for some sort of patrol. It’s apparent that Ellie and Dina are unaware of their disadvantageous numbers vis-à-vis the WLF.
In the third installment of The Last of Us Season 2, a serene atmosphere seems to precede an impending turmoil. The premiere episode bore a similar vibe and concluded with a chilling climax. The latest episode also ended on a comparable note, hinting at a potential disaster in the next episode as Ellie and Dina could encounter their adversaries. This episode skillfully portrays a tense quietness—every scene resonating with emotional intensity, as if the world is on tenterhooks. The tranquility and warmth evident between Ellie and Dina are juxtaposed with an ominous undercurrent of impending danger. It’s as though their temporary sanctuary will soon vanish, and the last glimmers of peace are the final sparks before darkness descends. As Ellie and Dina approach conflict, the emotional tension escalates—not only for survival but for everything they have experienced thus far.
