This story revolves around Amanda and Mike, a couple who aspire to start a family. However, their dreams are shattered when Amanda falls into a coma due to a brain tumor. As Gaynor persistently sells Amanda and Mike on new subscription upgrades, the situation deteriorates into something more ominous than anyone could foresee.

Black Mirror’s Ellis Ross Believes Gaynor Is a “Representation of Greed” in a Broken System

In an interview with Decider, Ellis Ross, the actress who portrays Gaynor, explains the complex relationship between her character and Rivermind Corporation. She discusses how Gaynor, initially similar to Amanda, transformed into a significant promoter of their subscription service. It’s worth noting that Ellis Ross is the daughter of Diana Ross and has starred in hit TV shows like “Girlfriends” and “Black-ish”. In her role as Gaynor, she is both a part of Rivermind and, in a sense, a victim of its influence.

It seems to me that she may not view herself as evil. Instead, her actions might appear that way due to past harm inflicted upon her when she was vulnerable. Now, unfortunately, she’s the one causing harm.

Gaynor’s livelihood is tied to her job as a representative for Rivermind, considering she also depends on their subscription service due to her past medical procedures. This role isn’t just a job for her, but a means of survival. Ross criticized Gaynor, labeling her morality as a manifestation of greed, and he believes that the subscription service provided by Rivermind has influenced her perspective on life in a negative way. However, Ross also stated, “She might be a representation of greed, but I don’t think anyone intentionally becomes a bad person. I believe most people have misguided ideas or think they are doing what’s right, even if it ultimately leads them to the wrong path.

Rashida Jones, portraying Amanda, noted the striking resemblance between her character and Gaynor, stating that they’ve both found themselves trapped within a flawed capitalist system, spinning in a relentless whirlwind with seemingly no escape route. As Jones put it, “The cycle is incredibly tough to break on either side. If there’s a chance to earn money and survive, you’ll take it – that’s capitalism.” Although their individual journeys differ, both characters find themselves in the position of needing to pay Rivermind to sustain their lives.
