As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I’ve played my fair share of games that require repetitive tasks to progress. However, striking the right balance between repetition and engagement is often a tricky endeavor, and Elrentaros Wanderings seems to stumble on this fine line.
Many video games ask you to repeat the same task multiple times, and this doesn’t necessarily mean it’s a negative aspect. For instance, you might find yourself tending to your virtual farm or engaging in combat to collect resources from enemies. Occasionally, getting stuck in a repetitive cycle can be exactly what gaming needs. However, these activities could become monotonous and tedious if not properly balanced with engaging elements. Navigating this fine line is no easy feat, and it’s fair to say that it’s quite challenging. Unfortunately, Elrentaros Wanderings grapples with this issue a bit, which is unfortunate because it has plenty of potential.
Upon arriving at a quaint hamlet named Elrentaros, whether as a man or woman, you pitch your tent on its outskirts and engage with the locals. Soon enough, you’re assigned an unusual mission: venturing into a dungeon to retrieve someone who went missing within. Although it seems straightforward, expect plenty of quick evasive moves since a considerable amount of dodging is required throughout this adventure.
Essence of Elrentaros Wanderings lies in its dungeon exploration, where you descend into perilous pits teeming with foes, aiming to endure until the finale and face off against a formidable boss. The battle system is straightforward yet entertaining, predominantly focusing on repeatedly attacking and tactically dodging when necessary. As you progress, you’ll gather or unlock skills that come with cooldowns you should monitor carefully. Initially, the dungeon delves are quite captivating, but the excitement may wane over time.
Although Elrentaros is merely one aspect of this captivating journey, your nights bring you back to a more conventional, modern world where you live as a typical student. In this alternate reality, the villagers of Elrentaros are either your schoolmates or teachers, making the whole situation quite intriguing. Each time you transition between worlds, it serves as an incentive to continue playing, but due to the lengthy gaps between these transitions in the school setting, I often felt frustrated by not getting to experience more of it.
In Elrentaros Wanderings, the main objective shifts towards forging friendships with numerous villagers to progress the story and acquire stat enhancements and skills. Given that the game is produced by the creators of Rune Factory, this social interaction-based quest comes as no surprise. However, to complete it effectively, you’ll have to delve deep into plenty of dungeons.
Building friendships with villagers often requires searching for items they need, which are hidden within dungeons. These items won’t be casually lying about; instead, each dungeon area has additional tasks to complete, offering valuable rewards upon successful completion. These tasks vary in difficulty, ranging from simple ones like locating a specific portal in a level, to more challenging ones such as avoiding a particular enemy or dodging trap spikes. Failing one of these tasks can make your journey into the depths seem fruitless, and when you’re eager for interaction with a character you admire, it can be quite frustrating.
Friendship surely has its charm, but enhancing your equipment and leveling up isn’t something to underestimate either. You’re constantly offered new gear with improved stats and subtly different attack methods, and acquiring better ones is essential if you want to be ready for excursions tailored to higher levels.
Despite the various features that Elrentaros Wanderings offers, what could potentially make it an enjoyable game is often hindered by its repetitive aspects. The constant exploration into identical caves and battles against the same or slightly altered adversaries becomes monotonous rather swiftly. Additionally, the relatively simple combat system, coupled with bothersome quest issues, left me yearning to quit playing quite early on.
Although Elrentaros Wanderings could appeal to people who like its dungeon crawling style, I personally didn’t get into it. The basic combat and monotonous gameplay structure didn’t keep me engaged, and the intriguing storyline of the second world wasn’t fleshed out enough for my taste. If you’re searching for the appeal of cozy Rune Factory adventures, look elsewhere, as Elrentaros doesn’t offer that charm.
