Videos have emerged showing a disturbing incident at TwitchCon in San Diego this weekend. While meeting with fans, popular streamer Emiru was unexpectedly grabbed and forcibly kissed by a man, even though security was present.
The event received widespread criticism from both those who attended and those who watched online, with many questioning Twitch’s management and security. Following the event, popular streamer Emiru, who has two million followers and creates cosplay and League of Legends content, released a detailed statement strongly criticizing Twitch’s handling of an assault that occurred.
‘That is a Blatant Lie’, Emiru Says
Emiru was assaulted at TwitchCon. Although Twitch officials stated the situation was managed well, Emiru shared a different account, contradicting their statements.
Here’s the full statement from Emiru following the TwitchCon assault:
Yesterday at TwitchCon, the person who attacked me managed to get past security and approached me during another creator’s meet-and-greet. They grabbed my face and attempted to kiss me, but thankfully weren’t successful. Many people have noted this could have been a much more serious situation.
I’m still upset by what happened, and it’s not the first time I’ve been in a difficult situation. But honestly, I’m even more disappointed with how Twitch responded to it, both during and after the incident.
I’m still confused about how he even reached me. The security guard reacting in the video is actually part of my team – ironically, my preferred guard was previously suspended for physically stopping a stalker and trying to hand him over to the police at a past TwitchCon.
The video shows several other security personnel nearby didn’t intervene as the individual walked away – they aren’t even visible in the footage, which is pretty surprising.
My manager was the one walking with me, and she and a friend were the only ones offering support behind the booth. Surprisingly, no one from the TwitchCon staff checked in to see if I was alright after what happened.
A friend who was there said that Twitch security staff were at the booth right after the incident, making jokes about not noticing what happened before quickly changing the subject and laughing it off.
It’s really concerning that nobody seemed to notice I needed help, and that the person who caused the problem was allowed to leave at first. I honestly don’t understand what the security team was doing!
Okay, so Twitch said this guy was caught right away, but that’s just not true. He actually walked away from my meet and greet! I didn’t even find out he’d been detained until hours after the attack, and honestly, it felt like my manager had to really push for them to do something about it, not the staff at TwitchCon who were actually there. It didn’t seem like they thought it was a big deal on their own.
I have a lot more to share, but I’ll talk about it on my live stream later today rather than writing a long post here.
I really appreciate everyone’s support, and I’m sorry you all had to witness that situation. This will be my last TwitchCon, and it’s tough to say after attending on and off for ten years, but I think other creators should think carefully about whether or not to go in the future. Even with my own security and staff, I didn’t feel safe or looked after, and I worry about how creators without those resources must have felt.
The shock of this event has been compared to the tragic shooting of Christina Grimmie, a singer who rose to fame on YouTube and was killed almost ten years ago while meeting fans in Florida. It’s a stark reminder that you can never truly know what someone is thinking or planning.
