In their latest trailer for Freja, a damage hero, Overwatch 2 has hinted at the possibility of Emre Sarioglu becoming a playable character. This tantalizing suggestion, found in a datapad towards the end of the animation, has reignited speculation among Overwatch 2 fans who recognize his face.
Regardless of whether the ex-Overwatch operative makes an appearance in the FPS game or not, a significant question arises: What kind of character could Emre become? He might team up with Mercy as a support character in Overwatch 2, take on a more aggressive role alongside Freja as a damage dealer, or even shield his allies together with Reinhardt as a tank. With limited information available about the Turkish strategist, there are some clues that suggest what role Emre might play if he were to be included in Overwatch 2.
Who is Emre Sarioglu in Overwatch 2?
An Overwatch Operative Shrouded in Mystery for Nearly a Decade
In 2016, Emre Sarioglu made his debut in Ana’s Origin Story, but it wasn’t until two years later that his identity was unveiled. A document about Operation White Dome, where Torbjorn lost his arm, sparked speculation among fans that Emre might become Overwatch Hero 27 instead of Brigitte. Since then, he remained a mystery until the release of Overwatch: Declassified in 2023. This lore book finally connected his face to his name and revealed that Emre assisted Mercy and Sojourn in battling a radiation outbreak in Australia. Moreover, Emre played a role in Genji’s handover into the custody of Overwatch following his confrontation with Hanzo.
In addition to his short appearance in Freja’s Overwatch 2 hero intro, Emre is also a recurring figure in her backstory comic. He can be seen with Freja, Winston, and Tracer on various Overwatch search and rescue operations, strategizing to save civilians. Notably, he also takes a stand against Soldier: 76 and Ana when innocent lives were endangered due to Blackwatch’s involvement.
Support Emre – Baptiste with a Dash of Sombra
It’s apparent that Emre, who demonstrates strong principles and prioritizes life-saving actions, seems best suited for the role of a support character. His significant achievements in medical care and first aid make this alignment particularly fitting. Moreover, the Support category has the least number of characters at present, creating a gap that Emre could effectively fill. Given his calm demeanor and strategic acumen, it’s not difficult to envision Emre as a battlefield medic akin to Baptiste or even as a versatile, supportive character like Sombra during Overwatch 2’s Mirrorwatch event.
Damage Emre – Soldier: 76 Meets Lara Croft
In terms of fitting the role, DPS Emre would not be surprising, considering his expertise in Overwatch missions involving stealth and retrieval. In Freja’s comic, he is depicted with a pistol and rifle, but to distinguish him from characters like Soldier: 76, he could be reimagined as a close-combat character, perhaps even wielding two pistols. This would give him the agility and finesse of acrobatic gunslingers such as Lara Croft, while ensuring that his abilities don’t overlap with Cassidy’s.
Tank Emre – Unlikely, but Not Impossible
As a fan, I’ve often pondered about Emre’s role, and while he technically fits the tank classification, it seems unlikely. However, his character shines with a cautious yet daring spirit, demonstrating an unwavering desire to protect others. Despite his relatively smaller stature compared to other tanks, this might not be a weakness but rather an advantage. He’s often depicted in the middle or back of squads, which could suggest a strategic role.
In fact, his unique positioning allows him to excel in tactical maneuvers, setting up deployable barricades, and using evasive actions that other tanks might not consider. So while he may not be the traditional tank, Emre’s versatility could make him a standout in any squad.
Despite any speculation about his part, it’s unlikely that players of Overwatch 2 will get to play as Emre anytime soon. The upcoming Season 18 support character, known as Aqua, has already been unveiled, and hints point towards a sword-wielding gladiator as the hero for Season 20. However, recent developments have brought Emre back into focus, so there’s hope that this iconic character might make his appearance in Overwatch 2 by 2026, marking the game’s 10-year anniversary.
