Entire Annapurna Interactive Team Resigns Following a Dispute

As a long-time fan of Annapurna Interactive, I must say this news has left me feeling a tad nostalgic and concerned, much like the protagonist from Stray when separated from his robot companion. The collective resignation of 25 employees is undeniably a heavy blow to the gaming industry, especially considering their exceptional contributions to games like Outer Wilds, Neon White, and What Remains of Edith Finch.

Recently, it’s been announced that all 25 members of Annapurna Interactive’s staff have decided to leave together, a move they described as one of their toughest decisions. This decision was made due to difficulties in separating the video game division from Annapurna into its own entity.

‘We Did Not Take This Action Lately’

According to Jason Schreier’s recently released report on Bloomberg, it has been confirmed that a mass exodus occurred at Annapurna Interactive, a game publishing division, with 25 employees choosing to resign. The report further states that talks to separate Annapurna Interactive from its parent company were unsuccessful, which ultimately led to the departure of Nathan Gary, the firm’s president.

In the chronology of events, I found myself parting ways with the company on September 6th. Not long after, a wave of colleagues – even top executives – followed suit in the ensuing days.

Speaking recently, Megan Ellison – heiress to the Larry Ellison fortune and founder of Annapurna Pictures – made a notable comment.

As a gamer, I’m deeply invested in nurturing our relationships with game developers and publishers through this transition. It’s not just about maintaining our current lineup of games, but also growing our influence in the interactive entertainment sphere. We’re on the hunt for chances to blend linear and interactive storytelling seamlessly across films, TV shows, video games, and even theater productions.

It’s no surprise that partners are worried about the fate of their projects, as they are scheduled to be released under the Annapurna Interactive banner. Over time, this label has demonstrated its publishing prowess by supporting games such as Stray, Outer Wilds, Neon White, Open Roads, and What Remains of Edith Finch.

According to Bloomberg’s report, it is stated that the current games under Annapurna Interactive will carry on operating business as usual.
