Okay, so Epic Games Store is doing another free game giveaway on December 11th! It’s a mystery title, which is always fun. But here’s the thing – it’s launching at a different time than their usual giveaways. They’re timing it to line up with The Game Awards in 2025, so it’ll probably go live around when the show is happening. I’m definitely going to check it out!
From November 27th to December 4th, Epic Games offered the sci-fi adventure game Universe for Sale as a free download. That offer has ended, and now you can get The Darkside Detective and The Jackbox Party Pack 4 for free instead.
Epic Games Store’s Mystery Game Promotion Is Returning for The Game Awards
Right after revealing its free game on December 4th, the Epic Games Store announced another promotion starting December 11th. This time, they’re bringing back their ‘mystery game’ format, meaning the free game won’t be revealed until it’s available to download. Epic’s website currently lists one mystery title for the upcoming giveaway, and the placeholder image includes The Game Awards logo, suggesting the game might be connected to or nominated for the 2025 event. Considering past promotions, we might see more mystery games announced before the December 11th event begins.

Epic Games Store’s December 11 Giveaway Will Start Later Than Usual
Epic Games Store usually gives away free games starting at 11am Eastern Time. But the next giveaway is linked to The Game Awards on December 11th, so it will launch at 5pm Pacific Time / 8pm Eastern Time – that’s 2am Central European Time on December 12th. This is just half an hour after The Game Awards 2025 is set to begin.
Epic Games Store’s December 4 Freebies Are Completely Unlike Each Other
Image via Epic Games While everyone waits for the giveaway celebrating The Game Awards, the Epic Games Store is giving away two free games: The Jackbox Party Pack 4 and The Darkside Detective. This is the first time a Jackbox Party Pack has been free since the original game was offered in January 2019, making it one of the earliest free games on the Epic Games Store, just a month after it launched. The Jackbox Party Pack 4 features five fun party games, most of which are best played with three or more people. The exception is Fibbage 3, a hilarious trivia game where you try to fool other players with made-up facts while also spotting the false statements amongst real, but strange, truths. It can also be played with just two people.
Unlike some other recent offerings, The Darkside Detective is a game you play entirely on your own. It’s the second in a series of free point-and-click adventure games from Epic. Created by Spooky Doorway in 2017, the game blends pop culture, science fiction, and horror for a unique experience that fans of both lighthearted comedies and the eerie atmosphere of shows like Twin Peaks might enjoy. It features a cynical detective investigating strange, supernatural cases, all presented with a retro pixel art style. Critics generally like the game – it has a “Strong” rating on OpenCritic with an average score of 76, and over two-thirds of reviewers recommend it.
