Epic Games Store Free Mystery Game for December 18 Stands on the Shoulder of Giants

Since 2019, the Epic Games Store has given away free games every December and leading into the new year. Typically, around 15 different games are offered, released one per day as a surprise. Unlike their usual weekly free games, these holiday giveaways are only available to claim for 24 hours.

The Epic Games Store is continuing its yearly holiday tradition: starting December 18th, they’ll be giving away one free game each day for a limited time. In the past, these holiday giveaways have included a mix of popular and independent games, and players can likely expect a similar variety this year. However, the first free game on December 18th has a tough act to follow, considering how good their last free offering was.

The Epic Games Store Free Mystery Game for December 18 Will Struggle To Reach The Heights of Hogwarts Legacy

Since December 2018, the Epic Games Store has given away at least one free game each week. While not every free game is a major title, they’ve included some really popular ones over the years. For example, players could get the Batman: Arkham Collection for free in 2019, Grand Theft Auto 5 in 2020, and Alien Isolation in 2021. Death Stranding was a free gift during the 2022 holiday season. Just this year, over 70 games have been offered for free, including big titles like Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands and Dead Island 2.

This month’s free game on the Epic Games Store is a big deal. After being hinted at as a surprise following The Game Awards 2025, it was revealed to be Hogwarts Legacy on December 11th. Even though it came out in February 2023, Hogwarts Legacy is still incredibly popular and a fantastic freebie for Epic Games Store users, especially since it normally costs $59.99.

I managed to snag Hogwarts Legacy for just $8.99 during the Steam Black Friday sale, which was an awesome deal! Unfortunately, it’s back up to its normal price of $59.99 now.

It will be tough for the Epic Games Store’s free game on December 18th to follow up the success of Hogwarts Legacy. If the next free game isn’t as high-quality or valuable, some players might be let down, and Epic Games probably wants to kick off its holiday giveaway with a strong offering.

The Leaked List of Epic Games Store Free December Mystery Games Could Meet Expectations

I saw something pretty wild online a few days ago! Apparently, someone leaked a list claiming to show all the free games Epic Games Store is giving away in December 2025. It’s just a rumor for now, but here’s what the list supposedly looks like…

  • Hogwarts Legacy – December 11
  • Jurassic World Evolution 2 – December 18
  • Desperados 3 – December 19
  • Total War: Warhammer – December 20
  • Tropico 5 – December 21
  • Chicken Police: Paint It Red – December 22
  • Loop Hero – December 23
  • LEGO Batman – December 24
  • Commander Keen – December 25
  • Farming Simulator 2022 – December 26
  • Slime Rancher 2 – December 27
  • Terraria – December 28
  • Detroit: Become Human – December 29
  • Mortal Kombat 11 – December 30
  • Red Dead Redemption 2 – December 31

If this information is accurate, the list of free games Epic Games Store is planning is impressive and should make a lot of players happy. While it might not be as big a hit as Hogwarts Legacy, Jurassic World Evolution 2 would be a great free game to follow up with on December 18th – it’s a high-quality game based on a popular franchise. To finish the holiday giveaway, offering Red Dead Redemption 2 for free would be amazing, as it’s still considered one of the best AAA games available, even seven years after its release.

It’s important to remember that leaks should always be viewed with skepticism, especially when they seem unbelievable. This supposed list of free games from the Epic Games Store is questionable for a couple of reasons: the sources aren’t reliable, and it includes games that were already given away for free, some as recently as March 2025. Also, offering Commander Keen on Christmas Day seems unlike Epic’s pattern of releasing bigger titles on that holiday. While this doesn’t definitively prove the leak is fake, it does make its accuracy uncertain. Fans will have to wait until December 18th to see if the free games live up to the standard set by Hogwarts Legacy.
