Towards the end of May, just as summer is about to officially begin, Universal will unveil its new theme park, Epic Universe – the first significant domestic theme park launch in a while. I had the privilege of touring Universal’s Epic Universe early for a sneak peek at everything it offers, including the four themed lands and all the rides and attractions that can be found within.
For those not acquainted, Epic Universe follows a central hub structure, where Celestial Park, situated around a picturesque lake, serves as the core area. The impressive Helios Grand Hotel is found in the distance behind it. As you enter Epic Universe through its first gateway, you pass under the gigantic Chronos portal – a storytelling mechanism used consistently across the park.
In Epic Universe, every one of its four unique realms features a special portal, acting as a gateway that takes you into the realm of Nintendo, Harry Potter, Universal Monsters, or How to Train Your Dragon. These portals branch off from Celestial Park and serve as landmarks in the distance, guiding visitors towards their next exciting escapade.

Celestial Park Serves as the Massive Hub of Epic Universe
Celestial Park stands out beautifully on its own, yet serves as an enticing introduction to the main attractions within Epic Universe. There are numerous stunning sights and photo opportunities, along with two thrilling rides to enjoy. Despite being just one part, it’s arguably one of the finest hubs any theme park has ever provided.
Constellation Carousel
The Constellation Carousel offers another chance to immerse yourself in the scenic beauty and auditory delights of Celestial Park, by riding a beloved classic concept. Beneath a stunning canopy, you can climb aboard unique creatures at the Constellation Carousel and enjoy Epic Universe’s creative take on this familiar ride experience.
What makes this ride unique isn’t just the journey itself, but its distinct design. The intricate modifications to the carousel’s inner workings, combined with the captivating sight of it from afar, truly set it apart. It lends a unique character to the park and serves as an excellent backdrop for photos as well.
Stardust Racers

In simpler terms, among the offerings of Epic Universe, Stardust Racers stands out as the ride with the greatest intensity. This launch coaster comes with unexpected elements that are rare in its design category. Moreover, the prolonged moments of weightlessness (with just a lap restraint) will leave riders shouting with excitement. What truly sets Stardust Racers apart is that it’s a dual coaster, meaning two ride vehicles move synchronously, creating a synchronized dance which is just as captivating to watch from afar as it is to live through the experience on-board.
Experiencing Stardust Racers alongside your partner’s coaster, whether they’re beside you, intersecting paths, or one flips upside-down above the other, this roller coaster isn’t just about how many loops or drops it can squeeze into two minutes. Instead, it’s a refinement and enhancement of an idea that has been explored before, showcasing numerous imaginative improvements. And the most delightful aspect? Every track offers unique routes, ensuring multiple rides are enticing for different reasons.
How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk
Traversing the portal leading into How to Train Your Dragon – Isle of Berk was my initial encounter at Epic Universe and it made quite an impact. Each time I passed through a portal in Celestial Park, it felt like a magical transition to different realms, but there’s something extraordinary about Berk.

When John Powell’s iconic score plays, and you gaze upon the hand-sculpted statues, waterfall, and island in the backdrop, it stirs strong emotions within you. Although there are no flying dragons overhead, Isle of Berk seems remarkably bustling among the four lands, boasting three rides, a performance, character encounters, numerous dining choices, and an encounter with a colossal Snow Wraith.
Spending hours in the “How to Train Your Dragon” realm all by yourself would be effortless, as you’d be captivated by its intricate details, enjoying the rides, and greeting Toothless and Hiccup. The Isle of Berk, my first encounter, left a deep impression that lingers still, despite other attractions being more spectacular or having superior rides. What makes Epic Universe exceptional is the way this land breathes life into “How to Train Your Dragon,” immersing you the moment you step through the portal and allowing you to explore at your leisure.
Fyre Drill

In this game, Fyre Drill transports you onto a Viking ship, arming you with a water cannon for aiming at targets and activating mechanical props. Just be prepared to get soaked!
That’s about as straightforward as it gets! Fyre Drill introduces an engaging interactive feature to what appears to be Epic Universe’s largest land. The task of hitting targets demands a bit of work, as you need to pump water into your cannon and aim carefully at each one. It essentially functions as Epic Universe’s only water ride, and on a sweltering Florida day, it will provide a refreshing break from the sun.
Dragon Racer’s Rally

At Epic Universe, Dragon Racer’s Rally might appear to be a straightforward ride with just circular movement; you’re seated in a winged glider, allowing your legs to dangle freely. However, don’t let appearances fool you! The wings can adjust their tilt by using levers on either side, causing the entire glider to sway up and down, adding an unexpected twist to this seemingly simple ride.
For most riders, simply pulling on the levers causes you to lean from one side to another, giving a slight wobble while rotating. However, those who can find a rhythm can actually make the glider spin 360 degrees, executing a barrel roll mid-flight. Unfortunately, none in our group managed this trick, but some came very close. It’s expected that as more people experience Dragon Racer’s Rally, new tricks will emerge, transforming the ride into something entirely different.
Hiccup’s Wing Gliders

Hiccup’s Wing Gliders serves as an engaging starting point for the Stardust Racers; think of it as a prelude. It incorporates a tiny tale conveyed via audio and animatronics, adds a playful twist midway that creates variety in pace, and takes you on a significant journey across Isle of Berk.
Stardust is a typical roller coaster more suited for older children and adults, whereas Hiccup’s Wing Gliders caters to a younger demographic without sacrificing excitement or speed. In fact, it maintains an exhilarating pace and adds an engaging element to the How to Train Your Dragon themed area.
The Untrainable Dragon
One of the two shows available at Epic Universe, titled “The Untrainable Dragon,” has been moved to Universal Beijing Resort. If you’re not acquainted with it, avoid looking up details as this isn’t a rehash of the “How to Train Your Dragon” films. Instead, it presents an original narrative where Hiccup lends his assistance to Berk’s citizens in dealing with a predicament at their Hatchery.
This show incorporates musical components, boasts an abundance of visually striking effects, and features at least two jaw-dropping scenes that are unprecedented in theme park performances. Overall, it’s a fantastic spectacle, with an engaging plot. However, even if you only attend for the opportunity to witness one of the most technologically advanced theater productions ever staged, The Untrainable Dragon would be well worth your time.
The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic
Visiting each Wizarding World within the Universal theme parks is an unforgettable experience, especially stepping into The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Ministry of Magic, which takes you on a walk through 1920s Paris filled with enchanting stores and eateries. The design aesthetic of the other Wizarding Worlds, such as Hogsmeade and Diagon Alley, shares similarities yet maintains its own unique charm. Here, you can enjoy a refreshing Butterbeer beverage, purchase delightful trinkets like Chocolate Frogs, and capture countless photo memories.

The Ministry of Magic could be the most expansive and transparent department within the realm of magical realms, despite not sharing the same immediately recognizable symbolism as some other parts. There’s a balance between elements from ‘Harry Potter’ and ‘Fantastic Beasts’, yet it doesn’t heavily favor one over the other. In essence, it offers another entertaining glimpse into the magical universe.
Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry Queue

I could go on for several paragraphs describing the Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry queue, but I wouldn’t be able to fully convey all the intricate details it presents. This queue offers an extraordinary experience that begins with a magical Floo Network transportation to the Ministry of Magic, and it holds a breathtaking moment unlike any other spectacle found in theme parks.
As I stood there, the line seemed to stretch endlessly, leaving me wondering if it would ever reach its end. Yet, as I moved along, more people kept joining, making the queue appear even longer than before. Clearly, Universal designed this queue to accommodate a crowd, knowing the immense popularity of this ride. Even if they had placed Potter fans in a simple beige hallway, I believe they would have waited hours just for the chance to experience this attraction. The intricate design of the queue itself hints at the immersive experience that Universal intends to offer.
Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry
Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry sets a new standard for theme park attractions, showcasing exceptional use of animatronics, dynamic ride movements, immersive storytelling, and innovative design. Epic Universe has masterfully extended the magical world of Potter with a narrative that’s engaging yet straightforward, featuring both beloved (and perhaps less-adored) characters, along with numerous exhilarating and unanticipated moments.
As someone who may or may not be well-versed in Harry Potter’s magical world, I can attest that experiencing Battle at the Ministry was an engaging adventure regardless. It wasn’t overpowering for younger witches and wizards, yet it didn’t compromise on its depth either. Each ride in the Wizarding World is distinctive, whimsical, and imaginative in their own enchanting ways, but Battle at the Ministry stands out as the most remarkable theme park ride at present. Epic Universe had high expectations for their latest Harry Potter attraction, with a line that could stretch over hours, and they certainly delivered with Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry.
Le Cirque Arcanus
At the Epic Universe property, Le Cirque Arcanus offers an extraordinary blend of magic spectacle, circus acts, and dramatic play. Prior to the performance, intriguing visual jokes set the stage for a tale inspired by the world of Fantastic Beasts. As you take your seat in the theater for the main event, be prepared for unexpected twists and turns.
Although the preliminary performance might be more compact, the principal event unveils an astonishing breadth and magnitude that leaves you speechless. The transformations of the stage and the remarkable animatronic or puppet work are breathtakingly impressive. This show is definitely worth settling in to watch, and it serves as a testament to the artistic talent and inventiveness of Epic Universe as a whole.
Dark Universe
Experience the immersive world of Dark Universe as it seamlessly blends into Epic Universe, offering an enchanting journey reminiscent of the timeless Universal Monsters. Enter the quaint town of Darkmoor via a magical gateway, and let Danny Elfman’s captivating soundtrack guide you through this mesmerizing realm. The cobbled streets, eerie ambiance, and gothic architecture set the stage for chilling encounters at every turn. Delight in intricate details such as a windmill that intermittently ignites, a subterranean tavern called the Burning Blade, offering garlic pretzel “stakes,” and Das Stakehaus restaurant, all paying homage to Universal’s iconic monster movie legacy.

I’m quite fond of Universal Monsters, and the Dark Universe exceeded all my expectations. It was thrilling to witness The Invisible Man wandering around, teasing guests, pausing to listen to a local play her violin and share a chilling tale, or simply standing in awe before Victoria Frankenstein’s castle. Dark Universe has masterfully created an eerie ambiance, and that’s just scratching the surface – I can’t wait to see it all come alive at night.
Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment

At Epic Universe, Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment was the ride I couldn’t wait to experience, and it truly exceeded my expectations. Employing a ride system reminiscent of Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey, this thrill ride transports you into a chaotic experiment, where Victoria Frankenstein is on a quest to capture Dracula. Even before boarding, the ride’s queue showcases stunning design work that sets the stage for what’s to come. But it’s the ride itself that takes the cake â I’ve never seen animatronics as lifelike as these! Their movements, attention to detail in their designs, and seamless integration with the screens behind them create an immersive experience that is hard to beat.
Experiencing the animatronics in Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment is awe-inspiring, but what truly sets it apart is the innovative ride system that places you in optimal positions to view them or even jump at their unexpected scares. Universal Studios has successfully updated its monster universe with one of its finest rides yet.
Curse of the Werewolf

Initially, Curse of the Werewolf appears to be an ordinary medium-thrill roller coaster. However, after hopping aboard, it becomes evident why this ride stands out. Instead of following a predictable path, each car on the coaster spins randomly, making it impossible to discern their speed or rotation count. Consequently, as you navigate the track’s twists and turns, you find yourself rotating 360 degrees without knowing whether you’re moving forward or backward.
Apart from the dizzying spins, there’s something unexpected about the track in Curse of the Werewolf that I won’t reveal. It’s a surprise element that takes you off guard.
Super Nintendo World
Among the four portals, Super Nintendo World stands out as the one that many people might recognize more easily due to its rides being similar to ones already existing globally. Interestingly, Universal Studios Japan offers all three attractions that Epic Universe does, while Universal Studios Hollywood features the same Mario Kart ride, which has been operational for a few years. However, it’s important to note that Super Nintendo World will be the debut video game-themed land for many visitors, and Universal has made an effort to fully immerse guests in a magical Mario universe.

Initially, stepping into Super Nintendo World feels like a vibrant, sensory adventure. It’s filled with vivid colors and intricate details â from the animated Piranha Plant munching away to coins spiraling mid-air. Seeing Mario’s world so meticulously crafted is truly heartwarming. This immersive experience promises to put a smile on the faces of guests, regardless of age, as they marvel at every tiny detail.
Drop by Toadstool Cafe for a quick meal or simply explore, while Super Nintendo World offers various activities. The Power Up Bands serve as an essential interactive feature at Epic Universe, comparable to Hollywood and Japan, enabling you to transform your adventure into a game by collecting coins, uncovering hidden mysteries, and engaging in competitions. Super Nintendo World aims to foster a sense of play within its premises, and there are numerous chances for you to join the fun.
Mario Kart: Bowser’s Challenge
Experiencing augmented reality (AR) in the Mario Kart ride at Universal Studios Hollywood is innovative and an enjoyable method for visitors to immerse themselves in a life-size version of their favorite game. The journey itself is entertaining, filled with amusing references to famous Mario Kart scenes such as Rainbow Road. For further insights on Mario Kart, be sure to check out our review of Super Nintendo World in Universal Studios Hollywood.
Using AR in the Mario Kart ride at Universal Studios Hollywood is a fresh idea and lets guests engage with a tangible version of their beloved game. The ride is amusing, complete with witty tributes to iconic Mario Kart moments like Rainbow Road. Yoshi’s Adventure
Among the rides at Epic Universe, this one is likely the most suitable for children, making it challenging to find fault. It offers a unique perspective of the land, with an interactive feature designed to be easily manageable by young kids. Additionally, you’ll encounter many beloved Mario characters and adversaries along the way.
Although some might find it slow or even dull, there’s a charm in how Epic Universe introduces a more relaxed experience, similar to what was seen in Universal Studios Japan, amidst such a well-known brand.
Donkey Kong Country

In the vein of Super Nintendo World, Donkey Kong Country seems like a distinct realm within a realm. The area is brimming with references to Donkey Kong, ranging from the familiar K-O-N-G letters to an engaging drum mini-game and a shop nestled inside an airplane’s side.
Standing grandly amidst it all is the Golden Temple, a striking spectacle. Additionally, it houses Mine-Cart Madness, a thrilling ride themed after Donkey Kong within Super Nintendo World.
Mine-Cart Madness

Experiencing Mine Cart Madness feels like being right in the thick of Donkey Kong’s mine cart levels. With its unpredictable curves and twists, sudden boosts after barrel escapes, and thrilling jumps, it’s the ultimate roller coaster ride. What makes this adventure unique is the illusion that the track seems damaged or incomplete, yet the cart somehow manages to keep moving. This visual joke adds a touch of character to Mine-Cart Madness, leaving riders momentarily questioning their safety, if only for a fleeting instant.
If you’re a fan of Donkey Kong or simply seeking an enjoyable rollercoaster experience, Mine-Cart Madness won’t disappoint. It stands out with its distinctive charm from other medium coasters within the Epic Universe. For Nintendo enthusiasts, this attraction truly shines as a noteworthy gem.
Epic Universe Preview: Final Thoughts
At the outset of our journey, our guide shared that Epic Universe aims to rejuvenate the essence of theme parks. However, I’d counter that Universal has already infused an impressive amount of theme into their parks. Epic Universe skillfully encapsulates four unique themes, creatively ties them together, and engages you in these beloved properties through unexpected and joyful experiences.
Each portal offers a diverse range of experiences catering to all, ensuring no one is left unimpressed. The intricate design details make wandering through them an awe-inspiring experience. Epic Universe marks another significant advancement in the theme park industry, making it a must-visit theme park attraction for years to come.
The much-anticipated opening of Universal’s Epic Universe is set for May 22, 2025. During our sneak peek, Game Rant was generously accommodated with a stay to facilitate this review.
