My Hero Academia stands out uniquely, delivering an epic superhero narrative filled with high-stakes intensity and grandeur. The story revolves around Izuku Midoriya, the chosen one, and his guide, All Might. This anime has taken shonen genre to new heights through its gripping plot twists and richly developed characters that embody the essence of what makes My Hero Academia exceptional. While popular characters like Katsuki Bakugo and Shoto Todoroki grab a lot of attention, characters such as Shota Aizawa from U.A. High School, also known as Eraser Head in his hero form, have been instrumental in Midoriya’s journey since the beginning.
Despite appearing stern and unyielding, Aizawa sometimes gives off an icy impression. However, behind this demeanor, he boasts a wide circle of friends among both his fellow teachers at U.A. High School and his students, with Eraser Head being particularly well-known within Japan’s hero community.
7. All Might
Aziawa’s Peer Who Grows To Become A Friend After Frosty Beginnings
- Debut: Anime (Episode 1), Manga (Chapter 1)
In the halls of U.A. High School, MHA’s beloved figure, All Might (also known as Earth’s mightiest hero), basks in admiration and applause, leaving Aizawa feeling disheartened. Initially, their professional bond was marked by turbulence, as All Might’s perpetual optimism and lenient teaching style contrasted sharply with Aizawa’s firm belief in strict discipline for his students.
Although initially at odds due to differing perspectives, Aizawa and All Might gradually develop a newfound admiration for one another as Class 1A embarks on thrilling escapades. This newfound respect extends to the point where they are comfortable enough to invite each other out for a drink. Concurrently, Aizawa demonstrates concern and support towards his fellow hero when All Might decides to retire from active superhero duty.
6. Eri
A Gifted Child Who Aizawa Oversees
- Debut: Anime (Episode 66), Manga (Chapter 128)
In a past filled with adversity, the sensitive and potent character named Eri was manipulated within the Shie Hassaikai gang as a pawn. However, this changed when Midoriya and his allies bravely saved her during an unprecedented rescue mission. Since then, Aizawa has taken on the role of caretaker for young Eri. Currently, she resides at U.A. High School’s campus to ensure proper management of her unique and intricate power, Rewind, under Aizawa’s watchful eye.
Though Aizawa is generally perceived as devoid of emotions, Eri surprisingly elicits a kinder aspect from her protective figure, creating a delightful substitute father-daughter bond that highlights the tender side of Eraser Head.
5. Hitoshi Shinso
A U.A. High Student Who Aizawa Takes Under His Wing
- Debut: Anime (Episode 15), Manga (Chapter 23)
Right from the start, Hitoshi Shinso stands out to Aizawa at U.A. High. Their Quirks, Brainwashing for Shinso and Erasure for Aizawa, are often linked to villains, but Shinso eventually shifts to the hero course due to his determination and abilities. Impressed by his potential, Aizawa guides Shinso, much like All Might did with Midoriya, making him a protege of sorts.
From my perspective, both Shinso and Aizawa exhibit reserved natures, yet there’s an intriguing dynamic between them hinting at a mentor-protégé bond. Remarkably, Aizawa seems to see reflections of his past self in Shinso, which fuels his determination to guide him on his journey towards becoming a hero.
4. Ms. Joke
A Long-Time Acquaintance Who Constantly Teases Eraser Head
- Debut: Anime (Episode 53), Manga (Chapter 103)
Though Aizawa might not openly admit it, there’s an undeniable bond between him and Ms. Joke, a teacher from Ketsubutsu Academy High School who once worked with Eraser Head during their youth. Their workspaces were actually quite close. You’ll often see Ms. Joke teasing and joking around with Aizawa. She frequently tries to coax some emotion out of him whenever they meet again, all while their students vie for their hero licensing at the Exam Station.
Regardless of their differing natures, the extensive past they share gives Ms. Joke a level of respect-commanding friendship, though she may become a nuisance for Aizawa when they’re in each other’s company.
3. Midnight
Friends Since Adolescence, Midnight Recommended Aizawa For A Role At U.A. High
- Debut: Anime (Episode 9), Manga (Chapter 3)
A long-time acquaintance of Aizawa from U.A. High, who is affectionately known as Midnight, has a history dating back to their school days. Although Midnight was a year ahead, they developed a bond while working at the same hero agency and mourned together over the loss of their mutual friend, Oboro Shirakumo. After joining U.A. High’s faculty, Midnight advocated for Aizawa to work alongside him, recognizing that the usually reserved hero could nurture future heroes effectively. Despite Midnight’s boisterous nature, they have maintained a harmonious working relationship with Aizawa.
In the aftermath of a tragic event during the Paranormal Liberation War, which took the life of Midnight, Aizawa feels deeply impacted by the unexpected demise of his comrade. Despite this, he strives to carry on and offers comfort to his pupils who are also struggling with their vulnerabilities.
2. Oboro Shirakumo
A Childhood Friend Who Tragically Becomes A Radical Villain
- Debut: Anime (Episode 107), Manga (Chapter 255)
Prior to the unfortunate event, Shirakumo, Aizawa, and Hizashi Yamada were inseparable comrades at U.A. High School, aspiring to establish their own hero agency and achieve greatness together. Shirakumo was a cheerful and compassionate individual who often boosted Aizawa’s morale, making him feel more confident. Aizawa admired Shirakumo for his encouraging demeanor.
During their hero training, Shirakumo bestowed his goggles upon Aizawa, which proved to be a vital component of Aizawa’s hero equipment when he utilized his Erasure Quirk. Unfortunately, just as they were about to embark on their careers, tragedy struck, and Shirakumo lost his life while battling a villain. He later reappeared as Kurogiri, one of All For One’s Nomu creations.
The villain Kurogiri, skilled in teleportation, plays a crucial role in the battle between good and evil. However, Kurogiri is eventually captured. Trying to connect with their old friend, Aizawa and Yamada express their deep feelings. They discover a hint of Shirakumo within Kurogiri, suggesting that the bond of friendship still holds significance for the now corrupted adversary.
1. Present Mic
A Loud-Mouthed Colleague Who Has Been Best Friends With Aizawa Since Their School Years
- Debut: Anime (Episode 3), Manga (Chapter 3)
Among the diverse faculty at U.A. High School, it is Yamada, more commonly known as Present Mic, who forms a strong friendship with Aizawa over the course of My Hero Academia. This bond dates back to their days as students at U.A. High. In their younger years, Yamada, Aizawa, and Shirakumo were inseparable friends, planning to establish a hero agency together. Sadly, Shirakumo passed away prematurely, halting their aspirations. During their student days, it was Yamada who came up with the unique hero alias Eraser Head for Aizawa, which has since been widely recognized.
Regardless of Yamada’s boisterous demeanor clashing with Aizawa’s laid-back attitude, they have remained inseparable, sharing their journey from youth to work life. The bond between them has only strengthened upon reconnecting with their old friend Kurogiri and observing his transformation into a villain.
