This article contains major spoilers for Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2.
Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 is filled with memorable characters, both allies and villains, who shine thanks to the game’s fantastic writing. Throughout the twists and turns of the game’s narrative, it becomes increasingly clear that not every loose end will be tied up nicely by the game’s end. This leaves Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 in the perfect position for a potential threequel to follow up on, and one of the game’s most interesting villains could be at the heart of this future story.
Although Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 finally sees justice dealt to Istvan Toth and Markvart von Aulitz, two of the primary villains from the first game, it leaves the fates of other villains unclear. Otto von Bergow escapes during the siege of Suchdol after Sigismund retreats back to Hungary, leaving the game’s overarching antagonist without his proper due. However, the most interesting plot left hanging is that of Erik, the commander serving under Toth and von Aulitz, who doesn’t see a clear resolution by the game’s end while still having a chip left on his shoulder.
Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 Leaves Erik as One Chekov’s Gun Waiting to Fire in KCD3
Erik Serves as the Perfect Foil to Henry’s Character
Erik has played important roles in both Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 and its predecessor, but has only become increasingly important as the series has gone on. He was the son of a family killed by Istvan Toth, who then adopted Erik into his army and became something like a father figure to him. After studying the art of sword fighting under Toth, Erik rose through the ranks to become a commander, leading assaults against Wenceslas’ allies on several different occasions.
There are some clear parallels between Erik and Henry, both of whom lost their parents to Istvan Toth’s army. However, while Henry sought revenge against Toth for destroying Skalitz and stealing the sword of Sir Radzig, Erik joined up with Toth’s band and grew to become very close with the man who murdered his parents. After Henry kills Toth in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2—thus, fulfilling his quest for revenge—Erik takes up his own quest for revenge against Henry for murdering the man he had become so close with.
If Kingdom Come: Deliverance 3 Happens, Erik Will Likely Be in Hot Pursuit of Henry
In a compelling twist, the final encounter Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 players can have with Erik is entirely optional. Players can choose whether to accept Erik’s invitation for a duel against Henry after Sigismund’s troop retreat out of Bohemia, where they will face a version of Erik that has nothing left to lose. Although this one-on-one battle can be tough, there is never a concrete winner as a defeated Erik will goad Henry into killing him, only for their exchange to be cut short by Markvart von Aulitz riding with an army to attack Suchdol.
Regardless of whether players choose to duel Erik or not, it appears he remains alive to seek out his revenge in a future threequel.
The last time players see Erik, he is wounded but alive as Henry rides off to warn the castle about the incoming attack. With neither side seeing justice from this duel, it seems likely that Erik will continue to hunt Henry down once he has regained his strength, leading to a potential confrontation in a future Kingdom Come: Deliverance 3. With the series’ major theme being the moral questions surrounding the cycle of revenge, Erik is positioned to be the ideal villain for KCD3 who can further show Henry the effects of war, and how revenge can’t change the past.
