The game “Eriksholm” unfolds in a fictional city that shares its name with this title. By the time players start the game, the city has undergone a dramatic change due to the rising steam industry, as evident in the initial explorable area, Cutter’s Hill. Originally a promising district, Cutter’s Hill now faces stagnation and poverty due to the city’s swift industrial evolution. However, Cutter’s Hill is merely one of several intriguing locations players will have an opportunity to visit. Reflecting on the game’s varied setting, Hejdenberg commented:

By the time players begin the game, this city has experienced a significant transformation thanks to the growing steam industry. This is evident in the initial explorable area, called Cutter’s Hill. Once a vibrant district, Cutter’s Hill now struggles with stagnation and poverty due to the city’s rapid industrial transformation. However, Cutter’s Hill is just one of several interesting locations players will be able to visit.*

In every location we explore, there’s a unique tale to uncover. Yet, we strive to avoid stereotyping by saying something like, “This place is affluent, so everyone here must be villainous.” Instead, our aim is to capture the authentic experiences of these characters without resorting to excessive dramatization. We want to highlight that they each face challenges in their own unique ways, revealing their individual struggles and complexities.

Hejdenberg emphasized that while elements of unrestrained capitalism and industrialization might emerge within the game, they do not define the essence of “Eriksholm“. Instead, it is a deeply personal narrative focusing on Hannah’s story and her courageous journey.

At Eriksholm, characters take center stage in the overall experience. Among them is Hannah, our apparent main character, but there are also two other characters to play as: Alva and Sebastian. Hejdenberg noted that the gameplay dynamics change depending on who you’re controlling, with different elements introduced when playing as Hannah and significant shifts until you join forces with Alva, creating a sort of alternating scenario.
