- Episode 6 showed a different side of Joel and his relationship with father and brother, adding depth.
- Season 2 explores the consequences of actions, with Joel meeting an unfortunate end.
Despite the fact that the journey for The Last of Us season 2 is nearing its end, it’s been a challenging and emotionally taxing experience for viewers, particularly those who are fond of Pedro Pascal’s character Joel. However, it’s not just Pascal’s devoted fanbase that have been vocal about their dissatisfaction with his character’s unexpected exit from the show. His sister, Lux Pascal, has also expressed a desire to see her brother’s story unfold differently in the series.
Apart from episode 2 of HBO’s The Last of Us that left a chilling impact on viewers, episode 6 was particularly heart-wrenching for many as it delved deeper into Joel’s character. Instead of just seeing his stoic side, fans got to explore the influence of his father on him during his teenage years. This revelation showed us how Joel’s protective instincts over the years were molded by his past, where he fought to shield his younger brother Tommy from their abusive father. This “generational trauma” was vividly depicted in the opening scene, significantly shaping Joel and Ellie’s relationship.
Joel’s actions throughout the series were often driven by fear and a desire to do what is right, despite the dire consequences. However, episode 6 provided a clearer picture of the complex survivor that Joel was, offering insights into his past struggles. Unfortunately, the second season’s theme revolves around people dealing with the repercussions of their actions, and Joel experienced the harshest “reap what you sow” outcome at the hands of Abby Anderson.
Lux Pascal Thinks Pedro’s Exit in The Last of Us Is Her Brother’s Worst Onscreen Death

At the 2025 Platino Awards (as reported by Entertainment Weekly), Lux Pascal spoke about her emotional response to her brother’s character, Joel, being killed off in The Last of Us season 2’s second episode titled ‘Through the Valley’. Despite knowing Pedro Pascal’s character’s fate, the scene still took a toll on her, prompting her to consider tossing her iPad aside after watching it. “Being Pedro Pascal’s sister, I knew the direction that episode would take. I was aware of what was going to happen. Yet, when I watched it, I felt so strongly about it that I wanted to throw my iPad.
Lux shared her strong emotions after witnessing her brother’s character die prematurely in various series, including Game of Thrones, The Equalizer 2, and now The Last of Us. She admitted that she often cries when such events occur, as each death was increasingly brutal. Moreover, Lux mentioned that it was difficult for both her and the audience to accept the character’s demise, especially since Pedro, the actor portraying Joel, had a tough time distinguishing his feelings from those of the character he played.
As we approach the final episode of Season 2 for “The Last of Us,” with Season 3 already planned and focusing on Abby’s viewpoint, fans are eagerly anticipating what further twists and turns await Ellie, Dina, and Tommy, as their lives become increasingly tangled, and how this game adaptation will conclude its narrative by May 25, when the season finale streams on Max.
